I'm new to the forum. Looking to build a 6.5/284. I have a Mauser 98 action I want to build around. I know I would be better suited to build on a 700 action but I have had this 8mm for 45 years and would like to bring it to life. Any suggestions

I have a 6.5x284, have not shot it much since getting a 6xc. Both are great, the 6.5x284 is a great cartridge, my original Savage barrel was never great accuracy, new one shoots great.

here's a 6.5-284 built on a Husqvarna H5000 HVA action, 24" Benchmark #1 contour barrel, Timmy Trigger, Wildcat Composite stock, palm swell added, its a dream to shoot and a nice weight for hunting everyday

Weatherby you have some nice rigs. But the best is that Kimber!!!

Thanks Ramrod79,

My gunsmith and I just built two identical Kimber Montana 84L 6.5-284 one for the Wild Sheep Society of BC and one to raise funds for Hunter Heritage, we used 24" #2 Benchmarks on them and they turned out awesome and very accurate with handloads or factory ammo,

Here is the reamer print I used to shoot the following group at 600 yards... (There are 5 shots in there; not 4...) Use Lapua brass and you do have to turn the necks to clean them up and get .003 total clearance. It is based on the Whitley reamer with some mods suggested by my gunsmith.

Sierra 142 MK
H4350 at 48.47 gr, BR2 primers
Barnard Model "S", Krieger 28" 8 twist, Jewell Trigger

My suggestion is to go with a straight 284 Win. I built a 6.5 and it shot lights out.....for 550 rounds. After that the barrel was toast. My experience and also a fellow shooter's experience is that barrels don't last long with the 6.5x284. 1 Kreiger barrel and 1 Douglas Premium barrel....toast.

For a HUNTING rifle, how many years of shooting is 550 rounds? Most last for 800 anyway. That can be extended a bit using a powder like RE26.
Even so, I had 2 years of competition on my 6.5 before it shot that screamer of a group. I'm ok with a 4 year interval between barrels. If that's a problem, shoot a 308.

I have 2 6.5x284's that I built myself. One is a heavy Benchmark with a 30"bull barrel, I built it on a Savage short action and it is a single shot for mostly long range plinking and varmint hunting, first two loads found a winner, and shoots around .300 MOA out to 600 yds and .500 out to 1100 yds, farthest I have shot this. I have Vortex viper 6x20x44 mil dot and did all the work myself, basically used only the stock action and bolt body, sets in a Bell and Carlsons A5 knockoff with a full bedding block. Whole gun built for $1100. The second one is a 24' Savage takeoff a guy sold, had not been fired since leaving the factory, sporter barrel. I had a 1992 Savage 110 long action that they only made one run of, long action round back, with Warne type steel bases that have been screwed to the action and silver soldered also, rock solid from the factory. The other odd thing about this action, is it has a longer threaded action from the barrel, extending both back and front, has about a 1/4" notch cut for kicking a loaded round out. This rifle had a early Choate Machine syn stock, that I put pillars in and skim bedded with Steel bed, replaced the factory recoil lug with a 1/4" surface ground one, and trued the face of the action, and the barrel nut, adjusted the trigger, put on a Nikon pro staff 5, 4x18x40 mil dot. I had $200 in the complete 30/06, $75 in the factory Savage barrel to my door, $35 in recoil lug and $350 in the scope and rings. for a total of $660 invested, and shoots 3 shot groups into the .300-.375 all day long as long as I let it cool 5 minutes between groups. I cant shoot any better than that with a high dollar rig cost 4-5x as much. You will not regret the 6.5x284!

I sort of planed to burn mine out? So I started with a 28" barrel thinking it
could be set back and shoot on?
Yes, but you will probably only get another couple hundreds out of it. And that is based on setting it back BEFORE it goes south. I don't do my own barrels, so if I am going to pay to have barrel pulled, cut, chambered and installed, I would just want the work done on a new tube. But that's just me...

I had very good luck with my 6.5x284s also. Factory barrel was over 1000 rounds and still shot under moa. New barrel shoots way better than I can. I never pushed mine to fast and they usually get a chance to cool between shots.
