So I want to get my son started on learning how to adjust parallax, dial and hold offs.
He is shooting a 25-06 with a 4x12 Vortex(hunting rifle).
what would you recommend for a youth boy?

I would like to keep the price under $500

The Vortex Optics Diamondback Tactical FFP scope is new with Vortex. they are $350 and quite the deal for a FFP scope with christmas tree reticle. It gets good reviews too. It does not have an illuminated reticle though. So it might not be a good scope for low light hunting on low power cause FFP reticles can get pretty fine on low power. Would be create for banging steel and long range and general target.

How do you think they compare with the Sightron S-TAC 4-20x50mm, i know it doesn't have exposed turrets but its a SFP and I always here good things about sightron.

really would like to stay SFP for hunting purposes.

ORRRRR I might just have to get another gun lol for steel and long range for him to practice with, Boss(wife) might not like this idea lol

I have a Sightron III that I like a lot. I have never looked at a S-Tac. If it dials as well as the III it would be great.
Just to throw another option out there - the Vortex Viper HS-T 4-16x44mm are good scopes they are around $550 new but can be had used on eBay for under $400. That's a good value. I have one of these they are pretty nice. They dial very well.

I like my bushnell engage for an entry level scope. Pretty good glass, nice clean MOA reticle, pretty solid turrets, came with butler creek flip up scope caps, mine always RTZ. I think I bought mine for $350 on sale for the 4-16x44 Model.

So another question that just popped in my head, thoughts on MIL vs MOA starting out.

I tried a friends MIL and it just never clicked for me like MOA, but since he doesn't know MOA it might be better to go MIL.

Thoughts????

I would use what you BOTH use best. Because one of you will probably be the spotter and need to convey corrections to the shooter.

I think in inches so I use MOA. 1 MOA = 1.05" at 100 yards. 1 MIL = 3.6"
Almost all paper targets are in inches too...
I use a MOA reticle a lot to measure my groups on a rock face when I shooting maybe 700~800 yards. Since basic rifle accuracy is determined in MOA, it is easy for me to determine how my group size on the rock equates to desired accuracy. If I measure a 1/2 MOA group at 800 yards, I having a great day!
MILs work great for PRS shooters because you use less numbers when communicating. As in 12.5 MOA would be just 3.7 MIL. (I think)
Young minds learn better too.... :D

I'll second the Viper HS-T have a couple in 6x25 and they dial great, for the cost the glass is good quality and excellent support and warrenty.

I've heard good things here about swfa scopes. They have some in about your price range. It's great your son is involved.
