220 SWIFT: Goin' to 'dog town with Dad

Have a Ruger #1 heavy varmit barrel .220 swift in the gun safe. Used occassionally for coyotes or wood chucks. Lots of memories from a long time ago... One of my first rifle purchases after getting an engineering job out of school.. many years ago.. still have it. The only rifle with more memories is a .22 Remington model 12 pump ..... never went anywhere without it.

Have always had a love for 22 Centerfire rifles, but my favorite has always been the 220 Swift. I was a late bloomer, introduced to that caliber in 1999 while stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. Buddy of mine had a Ruger M77 in 220 Swift. It shot 1/2" consistently and he was committed to making it a 1/4" rifle.

Had the opportunity to buy that one, but I was getting ready to be deployed so I passed on that opportunity. Always regretted those circumstances.

Picked up a Remington 700 Varmint in that caliber last year, had it restocked with a Manners T7 stock and topped it with an Athlon Ares BTR. Not my buddies 1/2" rifle but with factory loads it shoots consistently between .6 and .7" at 100 yards. It has proved to be deadly out to 400 yards on jack rabbits.

My Dad wasn't much of a shooter, but definitely reminds me of good friends and making new memories with my son.

Here is another pic of it along with its sister, a Cooper varmint in 223 AI.
I will add that some of my best memories are of me and my father out groundhog hunting. That started many years ago when I was just old enough to go along and trail behind him. He is 80 now, I'm hoping that we get to go a few more summers.

My dad will be 80 in March. He's still hunting with no immediate plan to stop, I'm sure it's around the corner, I'm probably looking less forward to it than he is.

We had a plan to go out coyote calling this morning, but got shut down by high winds in the area. I do everything I can to make myself available to him and keep him active outdoors. It doesn't take much effort on my part, he's still pretty willing but he knows he shouldn't be out there by himself.

We will probably try again next weekend.
