6.5 prc vs 264 wm

Bass pro and Cabelas as much as I dislike BP have it on the shelves whenever I walk through.

Hopefully my Academy stocks it soon.

I think you'll be happy with the win mag. Especially since you already have experience with that cartridge. It should do you well.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I will be going with the 264 wm. I do reload.

Good choice if you reload. I got frustrated with the ammo manufacturers not supporting the 264 WM with their new high BC bullets as they all seem to have picked their own 6.5 that they wanted to support. As much as I would like to, I don't have much time to shoot much less reload. I am having a 6.5 PRC built and currently waiting on a stock. Anyone interested in the 6.5 PRC should listen to the Long Range Pursuit Podcast episode 1: Is the 6.5 PRC Here To Stay? from April 10, 2018. They talk with the Gunwerks folks about the development of the cartridge. As much as I had read about the cartridge before listening, I still learned a lot. One thing was that it was meant more as a SAAMI spec equivalent of the 6.5 x 284 than to compete in the fastest 6.5 race. They had originally looked at getting the 6.5 x 284 SAAMI approved but the problem was that there were lots of rifles chambered in 2 different versions of the 6.5 x 284 so making SAAMI cartridges that were approved for both would be difficult if not impossible and probably compromise performance in factory ammo. So the 6.5 PRC cartridge was meant to fall into the 3000 fps fast but not too fast velocity range with 140ish gr bullets that the 6.5 x 284 occupies and not really to compete with the faster 6.5 cartridges. Added advantages were doing it in a short action and obtaining the 3000 fps with a 24" barrel. The podcast is an interesting listen.

It's a good podcast and explains well the benefits and niche the prc occupies. One thing that bugs me is the inferred and practically stated claim by gunwerks that they developed the prc. I called Hornady and they said they didn't know what gunwerks was talking about and that Hornady and GAP developed the cartridge... very interesting.

I will say I'm enjoying how easy it is to buy prc and shoot. What Hornady is bringing to the market with the CM and 2 prc's is pretty amazing on he convenience factor.

Funny that the last couple days, on two different sites, guys complaining about brass not being in stock. Somewhat true, but a little more digging I found it in stock in 4 different places that typically aren't found in the "normal" haunts. I also found alot of loaded ammo in stock, all of which tells me there's a lot more interest in this cartridge than the nay sayers want to believe.

A couple months ago I needed some more brass, and most had it in stock, so you could shop a bit on price. Now if you find it, you best hop on it.....it's here to stay.....

Yes there is and that is a good question.

PRC is proprietary brass meaning only Hornady currently makes it. So that means that the brass is always out of stock and the factory ammo is limited in variety and availability.

I do not know when I last saw 264 Win Loaded ammo but the brass is in stock more often than PRC. Sadly with 6.5 being the trendy thing in competition shooting and in hunting all of your 6.5 cartridges other than Remington 260 are always boom and bust in terms of brass. So one month it is fine then you can not find brass at any price for 2-3 months then it fine again.

So I would look long and hard at who makes brass for what and how often it is unobtainable. If you are type that buys 3000 pieces of brass at a time then it does not matter.

I looked at 3 or 4 large hunting and shooting stores and none of them had PRC loaded ammo or brass for sale. Just yesterday and posted the links to prove it was unobtainable right now easily even for online orders! LOL
Midway has Precision Hunter today!
