270 cal experiences?

I have a bit of a soft spot for the 270. win and in turn anything .277 cal peaks my interest. I wanted to see who is shooting a .277 cal rifle for long range or for long range hunting? What caliber you went with (270. Win, 270. Wsm, 270 ss or Sherman), and what bullets/velocity are you shooting? How is the 170gr Berger for big game hunting?

I have a .270 AI with 30" SS Lilja 1:8" 3G barrel with JP Enterprise Beenie Cooley MB propelling the 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS (my current accuracy load, but have reach near 3100 FPS but with pressure signs with H4831SC and the group opens up). No experience with 170 Berger at this time.

I'm waiting on some 156 Hammer hunters right now for 270 wsm. For California and even out of state they might become my all around bullet. It shoots the 170 Berger's really well at 2980 fps with Retumbo. I shoot the 150 grain partition out to 400 then use the 170's for longer range shots. POI at 100 yds is only 1/2" vertically so it's no problem to carry both bullets. The 1:8 twist barrel is such a game changer for the 270's. It's my favorite rifle to carry for deer or elk and I have a lot of rifles. 6.5, 280 AI, 7 mag, 300 wm, 35 Whelan to list a few. Enjoy your 270!

I have a 270/375 Ruger that just got finished and should be here in a couple days. I had two barrels cut, a 25" 1-7 twist and a 28" 1-8.5 twist. It should be a ballistic twin to the 27 Nosler. The 25" is a #5 sporter contour and the 28" is a heavy varmint contour.

I have a hand full of different bullets to play with ranging from the 117gr Hammer Hunter up to the 168gr Hammer Hunter along with the 145 ELD-x, 140 Game Changer, 150 Berger, 140 Ballistic Tip, 135 SMK, 130 E-Tip and a couple other odds and ends left over from past projects. I expect the 140gr bullets to end up around 3300 fps and the 170gr bullets to be around 3200 fps.

I played with the 270 RUM for a little while about 5 years ago and I still have a reamer sitting here. I shot the 140gr bullets at around 3600 fps. Never did much with it but it shot well out to about 1100 yards which was as far as I ever went with it.

Shoot two .270 Win. and a .270 Wby. Getting the Wby back with a new Kreiger barrel next week. The Tikka .270 Win is awesome, very accurate and has the finest, smoothest factory barrel I've ever run a borescope through.

Bought my daughter left handed Remington 700.Loaded with 130 gr sierra BT with 60 grs of IMR 4831. Clocked at 3150.Took her to Montana and by the end of the week the guide's were calling her Annie Oakley .If she shot bigger than a quarter inch at 100 yard's she got mad

I guess depending on your definition of long range the 270 is really great.
If you're shooting beyond 700 yards the 7mm with 180 ELDM's is a run away.
I would go 7 wsm, and I've owned a 270 wsm, there's just no comparison when you get way out there.

I'm going from a 28 Nosler shooting 180 ELDMs back to a 270 WSM shooting 165 Matrix or 170 Berger's for my 1200 and in gun!! Beyond that a big 30 or 338!

This past deer season I ran the 170gn Berger's in a .270Allen Magnum at a conservative 3300fps. This load (93.0gn, US869) is probably near the bottom/starting but is pretty effective. Took a nice 6pt whitetail this year with it at 603yds. Boom, flop.
During the 2016 season I was using 97.5gn of 869 (don't have chrono speed for that) and took a meat doe at 250yds; the entrance/exit holes through the ribs were both golf ball size. No tracking just devastation.
I haven't done a lot of experimental load development with it but plan to try some of the different bullets (and maybe powders) this year. I've been told that the ABLR won't stand up to the speed/RPM's this round produces due to their softness but the regular AB's and Ballistic Tips will. I know the Ballistic Tips will and very nicely. I tried some 140gn NBT's, forget the load know, and ten rounds made one ragged hole at 100yds, but at over 3700fps! Anything mono metal will work. Powders, I have to be careful with due to possible powder bridging. Maybe some Retumbo, RL33, RL26, RL25 or Viht's 24N41, 20N29 or the newer N570 (if I can find any of them).
I still have a box of the Wildcat 169.5gn ULD RBBT and they actually shoot tighter groups than the 170gn Bergers but again, that is will limited load development.
All in all, this is probably the biggest, baddest rifle I will ever own and every time the sear breaks, whether on paper or deer, I get a smile on my face. Long live the .270!

Wow I'm a little surprised by that choice for 1200 yard shooting, I'm not knocking the 270 WSM at all I think it's awesome with 170 EOL's.

I'm just curious what made you decide to forego a caliber increase of .007 with better long range bullet options? I'm sure you have a good reason, I'm asking sincerely.

I've run the numbers and if I pushed my 270 WSM to 3100 with the 170 it would be traveling 1690 FPS, and retain 1078 Ft/lbs of energy at 1200 yards. Not too bad..

A 7 WSM with a 180 ELDM at 3050 will arrive at 1200 yards with 1374 ft/lbs of energy and traveling 1855 fps.
Pretty big difference in knockdown,and velocity for reliable expansion.

I totally get your point in moving away from the 28 Nos though, there comes a point where driving a smaller bullet to ridiculous velocities just doesn't pencil out, and moving up a caliber makes more sense..

The 7 Wsm seems like a great round as well, and has been known for extreme accuracy as well but I currently have a 7mm rem mag, so if I were to do it again I'd probably go with a 7 SAUM as it just peaks my interest as well or a 7-300 win mag as I have 1200+ pieces of Norma 300 win mag brass lol.

The 270 has just held a soft spot and would love to get into the .277 cal again. Knowing it's not the most popular, I was hoping to see what people are using, what would be the best route to go caliber wise, how the 170 Berger's are on game and real world experiences!!
