WHAT CALIBER???

There's nothing that can be done with a .30 caliber bullet inside of 1200yds that can't be done and done very well with a .300wm.
no, but there are things that can be done and are being done to the case design and chamber of a 30 cal to accept modernized long range bullets to fit the mag and are pretty accurate out of the box such as the 6.5 creedmoor and the 6.5 prc which have been designed not for the reason that other cartridges wont shoot a long heavy high bc bullet but for the same reason the 300 prc was designed. you will find that the 300wm and the 30.06 design was not based on these same reasons.

When it comes to thoroughly proven cartridges in the US the two highest on the list would probably be the 06 and 300wm. From military use to medium, large, and dangerous game they've been doing the job for more than 70 years in the case of the WM and for over a hundred in the case of the 06.

The biggest difference in the two is the added velocity and energy of the wm.
yes, they have been proven. many hire a gunsmith to modify them to shoot long heavy high bc bullets and fit them in the mag. great 30 cal rounds they are.

One of the main reasons for the stagnation of cartridge case design is because of people unwilling to let go of ancient junk that needs to be let go and buried in the past

All aspects of shooting have taken tremendous steps forward with new ideas and technologies except for case design, simply because of wildeyed kneejerk reactions to new cartridges, sure some do pretty much the same thing as the old has beens, but how many of you still use a horse and buggy from the early 1900's to get around in ? or do you still handle crank your car to start it ? yeah they will get you from point A to B but nobody uses that old tech anymore ,

this insane notion that the cartridges of old need to be honored and preserved for eternity needs to go the way of the locomotive .... to the graveyard ...

It's time to bury the old crap and support new ideas to encourage manufacturers to produce better, newer, higher tech products

Tired of all the old junk ........ We're 19 years into a new century and still dragging baggage from two centuries ago ....

I see your point and agree but also see an inaccurate generalization.
Technology is great where it applies and improves the situation but you seem to blob old technology into one generalized item. There are "new technologies" that are only interested in cheap manufacturing, and the corner cutting makes these new technology items, inferior to the old. My 1950 Remington 722 in 257Roberts is one example. I'll take a completely machined item like this, over any stamped ***, hands down. We can easily point out other examples, like driving with the new cell phones, being completely lost without an internet connection, etc. to show that new technology is often hyped up as the next best, while just being a vehicle to sell something. As someone that just retired from the high tech industry in medical devices, I can easily say that even if one of my tools is old, as long as it's useful, I use it. Similarly, remember how good the new stuff is when you do your next painful software upgrade.

I guess you missed my point and wandered off into cell phones and computers

I was talking strictly Cartridges and how they haven't changed much due to some fatal attraction of old tech people aren't letting go of, which is the main reason manufacturers keep on plugging with the same, because the old crap still sells, If people dropped them like a bad habit and stopped pumping $$ into that stuff it will change the marketplace and demand will spur new developments and perfect older ideas ending with new breakthroughs

Wouldn't bother me in the least if a lot of these older cartridges became obsolete and vanished from the store shelves

You're free to shoot what you want but calling old cartridges like the 06 and .300wm "junk" shows nothing but blind bias and ignorance.

They remain popular today because they still perform excellently just as designed.

IF they were obsolete they would have.

The problem is faster barrel twists, powders and bullet designs give an old cartridge new life. In order for something to stick is has to be materially better than a current offering in some tried and true caliber and have a lot of good factory ammo. A company like Hornady getting behind a round and assisting in developing it is a game changer...they make some good bullets and quality factory ammo that is reasonably priced...

If that were true the "Big 3" would have been down to one long ago.

Never discount personal preference and prejudice when it comes to primary reasons why some things and companies stick around forever..

Wrong. 300 Norma is 400 FPS faster than the old 300 WM. Not even the same ball back in performance and that ins't even going into some of the more exotic Wild cats. VE is the number one wound kinematic and there is no replacement for it. 300 WM is kind of anemic when compared to modern 30 cal magnums
