WHAT CALIBER???

I've owned or reloaded for most of the 30's. The only magnum I've kept is the 300 H&H because I reload and it's shoots awesome. If I didn't reload I would have a 300 Win Mag. Ammunition availability and variety of it that's available would be the reason for me. There are lots of good 30's but not reloading in my mind makes the decision a 300 Win Mag. If he decides to start then dies, brass, bullets and powder selection are great.

Yep, as someone already said...standard length action, 300 WinMag. Short action...300 WSM. Good factory ammo for both is readily available.
Just curious, have you thought about getting into handloading, or having a friend who is into it load for you?? Getting 800 yd accuracy may be a lot easier if you have a load tuned to your rifle...Most of the (readily available) factory ammo designed for long range accuracy features match bullets...these won't be cheap and also may not be the best for choice elk...nor will higher quality hunting loads with the bullets you'll want to use for that kind of application, even though these are relatively common calibers.
Long term, look at the cost of a single-stage press and decent dies, and you'll see that it'll be more economical over time to roll your own! Get with someone who handloads, get a basic gear list and price it out (RCBS starter kits are a pretty decent value) and then check/compare ammo prices...$2-3 per round OR MORE for the good stuff with the chance that it won't perform in your launcher, versus say $600-800 initial investment for equipment that'll last a lifetime. Also, just add a set of dies for any other caliber you get into. I'm not not knocking your choice NOT to handload, but 800 yard hunting...well, there's a reason most of the people here are handloaders. By the time you buy 20 boxes of premium ammo, you'd have paid for the equipment and supplies for about the same number of handloads. After that it's a lot cheaper to load the high-end stuff and get what you're after.

For factory bullet choice I can't imagine anything more available than 300WM. Store shelves around here rarely have more than one choice in the other 300's.

I don't know about military snipers, but I believe MOST police snipers DO use factory ammo. Due to liability (and probably lack of interest)- most don't reload. I understand police sniping is a short range game vs military- but still precise enough.

The biggest problem I can see with factory round users with the P.R.C vs WM mag is ammo availability. The link you provided above for midway P.R.C says out of stock. One manufacturer means your at there mercy especially if they have the D.O.D contract who are they gonna cater to sure isn't Joe blow consumer. Another thing to consider what if your P.R.C doesnt shoot the ammo very well, it happens. If your not gonna reload the I would suggest options are alot more in your favor.

I just bought an .30 cal hc carbon barrel blank from elk hunter in the classifieds to build a 800 yard light weight hunting rifle. Im not quite sure what caliber I should chamber it in.

I DO NOT RELOAD SO FACTORY AMMO IS A BIG CONSIDERATION

THANKS

Might be old fashioned but you can always find 30-06 anywhere.

300 Winchester!

I would tell you if you meant 800 yard shots you best be ready to buy reloads from a guy who knows what he is doing or be very lucky and get a factory round that shoots well in your gun (which may not be possible). If not you are going to have to have someone who knows what they are doing reload and test out your rifle to get a satisfactory long range load. Another possibility is the new barrel harmonic tuner similar to the old adjustable boss which was and still is a beautiful accuracy tool. I know I shoot a 7mm mag with the adjustable boss and it drives tacks when you adjust it to the load being shot. I am talking about 1/4" groups or less at 100 yards. A barrel harmonics tuner would be the best thing for your rifle, no matter what caliber or chamber you choose.

I do agree that the 300 min mag is the smart choice. But with the amount of marketing hornady is doing on their new projects i think one can expect a lot of new factory loads from other compnies in the future. I meen look at the commercial success of the Creedmoor.
