Opinions on Night Hunting Lights

Great info, thanks all. That area is close to CO so I plan to give it another go. The renting idea is great for a thermal system.
Even with the rancher's sensitivities, it was good to stay respectful and get exposed to this cool place. From Clarendon to Quanah, excepting Amarillo, the land with it's rolling hills, trees and water, was pretty nice.

Quiz him about varmint hunting. I shot a huge bobcat just south of Quanah and the coyote hunting was plenty good too.

Update my previous post about using $10.00 Walmart solar spot lights with red permanent marker on the lense;

Well I left my green light that goes on the rifle in my wife's 6.5 Creedmoor bolt action rifle...so I had to make do with what I brought with me...which was nothing outside a cheap scope and my 6.
5 Grendel. The scope has to go after this season.

Any way I have two of the lights described above on the "coon cage" facing down. The hogs show up a few minutes after 8pm...so it's real dark, but the little lights do a pretty good job of lighting the the hogs up.

Fortunately the cross hairs are a little on the thick side so lining her up at 107yds was not two tough.

The Hornady 123 SST pushed by 28.0gr of H335 are traveling just over 2500fps...the bullet entered jus behind the right jaw angling back and out through the opposite side, lower shoulder...she made about 15yds before she piled up!

I have hogs that have moved in on me and purchased a cheap green spot/flood light that I will use with my xbow and AR. I have only tested it in my backyard lighting up my pasture and spotted a WT deer on my pool about 125yds away, she never spooked, just looked at it walked off and stopped to look again, then just walked off through the pasture. I think that's the light I bought. If the deer are closer they don't like it. We've taken it out about four times but the hogs never have come in while we were there with the light. The one time...post above...I forgot the thing and had to work without it.

I have mine mounted in a 1" Scope ring put it on a rail of my AR...if a hog comes in while we are there it should be game over pretty easy if the brightness is not too much. With it on a rail that's mounted on the hand guard, the bright spot of the light is dead center in the scope.

Like I said I hope it's not too bright...I have been thinking about putting a dot on the center of the lens to kill the bright spot. The defused light around the spot really lights up the world down range, so the spot in the center isn't really needed.

We plan to use the light over the Christmas break (wife and I both work for the school district) so I hope to put the light on some hogs!

Some think red is better than green but as you wrote, intensity has to be a factor.

I think I'm going to start looking for hogs at other NW Tx areas. Thanks for the input. regards, mike

I've been using a wicked light for about 5 years hunting foxes back east. It mounts on top of your scope and is operated off a pressure switch that you velcro anywhere you want. They are sold with differs color led's for whatever you want. They come with a built in dimmer on the switch. They are expensive but for me and how I hunt they are worth every penny. I run a hand help kill light for scanning that has a much wider beam and switch to the rifle and wicked light once I spot something.

Agree on Sniper Hog lights. The whole kit is around $400 with extra lenses, rechargeable batteries, etc. Will be using mine again in Texas in 2 weeks.

This thread is a few years old. But it happens I also like my sniper hog lights. Not much use for them now that I have thermal.

+1 on a thermal. What a way to discreetly view night time activity on animals. I have learned so much, especially on predators and how they move / stalk in the dark.
