I'll start off by saying I've never really had a problem with savage, they just weren't my cup of tea. I've heard great stories of how they shoot but I have the stigmatism of what they were when I was growing up in my head.

Well this week I won a savage axis 2 hardwood in 243 from a raffle. I tried getting store credit and tried trading it somewhere else but no one would bite. So I decided to take it home and shoot it anyway.

With junk 180gr federal Ammo I had on the shelf from a previous rifle I started to sight it in. With no barrel brake in and honestly not really giving it the chance to cool off this little rifle will darn near throw groups to cover with a dime at 100!

Well I hate to admit it but this rifle has bumped my 22-250 Bergara out of the passenger seat as my truck coyote rifle.

Sorry for the long winded story I just never would have imagined a cheap free rifle would shoot so dang well with cruddy Ammo and not given much of a chance.

I had a similar experience about eight years ago. Won a Savage LRH in 6.5x284 at an Egg Shoot. With little fuss, a quick and dirty handload landed 5 shots in 1/2" at 200 yards. Serving as my LR practice rifle since then, it's has been totally reliable, and is still going strong as it approaches 1000 rounds. I have since acquired a few other Savages that have performed equally well. My only prior experience with Savage was a butt ugly 1930's vintage, Model 99 lever rifle in 300 Savage that I've owned since I was a kid.

Kind of hurts hearing you call a 99 butt ugly! They are one of my favorites.

LOL..,mine too... .. Like the old song says...."if you wanna be happy for the rest of my life....."
It's one of the few rifles I've owned that I will never part with it...She's over 80 years old, and still shoots and functions beautifully!

I just did a barrel swap on a stainless left hand Savage short action and turned it into a 22-250. I sighted it in with some factory Winchester plastic tipped 55 gr. ammo

Then I whipped a set of handloads to test it's accuracy.

First batch, four sets of three rounds each, just changing the powder charge.

Rifle started off with a .630" group, next batch just over an inch including a flyer but two rounds measured around .350", next three went into .350".

Next batch, one grain below book max went .230"!

Range 100 yds and the barrel is a 22" shorter off a stainless Axis rifle

Color me happy!
