I have found myself with a decision to make, and am asking for some help. I want a lightweight rifle (7lbs with scope). This rifle will not be dedicated to long range hunting. I would be tackling game up to elk size with it.

I have a sporterized Mauser 98 chambered in 300 win mag sitting in the safe. This rifle weighs 8lbs 2oz without scope. If I go with this rifle I am leaning towards a Wildcat Composits stock and a rebarrel with a lighter contour. Replacing the trigger with a timney w/ safety, and new bolt shroud. I think this would get me under my weight restriction.

Option B would be to build off a rem 700 short action chambering it in either 300 wsm or 7mm wsm. My options are plentiful this route for components.

I am not looking for different options as far as calibers go. What I am wondering is does one action give me that much of an advantage over the other? Whichever option you think is best, what components would you recommend to shave weight? Thanks in advance.

I've built two custom rifles on Husqvarna H5000 HVA actions, 6.5-284 and a 280AI using
Wildcat Stock
Timney Trigger
24" Benchmark #1 contour barrels
With Talley's and a VX3i 4.5-14x40 1" tube the 280AI is 7lbs 2.8oz

The 6.5-284 is a cpl ounces heavier with the 30mm version of that scope

I've also built 3x Rem 700 rifles with the same components and are almost identical in weight

Would personally go with a Lone Peak Ti action if I was going to build a purpose built lightweight long range hunter.

I love Mausers, especially FN Belgium made 98 actions. Even though I have two with one action waiting to be built I choose Rem M700 and some other newer actions. There's just so much more aftermarket support and options on components.

If I were wanting a rifle such as you describe, I would go with a stainless 700 SA (you can have it cerakoted a differing color if you prefer), have the bolt heavy spiral fluted, have it blueprinted, install a 26" 1:8 twist Proof Research carbon fiber barrel, and have it chambered for 7mm SS (Sherman Shortmag). TriggerTech or Timney trigger. Bed it all in a McMillan, Manners, or Stocky's carbon fiber stock. Use a BDL bottom metal. EGW HD 20MOA base. Seekins Precision rings. And whatever scope you want to put on it.

This should get you the results you are looking for with your weight requirements.

My best friend's dad brought a Mauser home from the war. We played with it using an old curtain rod as a ramrod! Well years later my buddy cleaned it up re-barreled it
in 30-06 and bent the bolt a little and hunts with it to this day steel butt plate and all!
