Cabela’s tags/ go hunt / hunting fool

I live in Oregon. Planning on applying for more tags in the West. Anyone using any of the services that apply for you? Are they worth using or better off applying yourself? Thanks

I use The Draw...it is run by a guy that was at Cabela's TAGS and WTA.

It depends on what you are using it for...if you know what state and units to apply for and are do8ng a DIY, it doesn't really make sense.

Them taking care of all the paperwork is nice, but the real value to me is in the expertise. I discuss with Jordan (at The Draw) what my goals are (ex, hunt elk in this timeframe, budget, importance of trophy, etc) and he and I discuss what states to apply for and why. He also knows a ton of outfitters so if that is how you will be hunting he can recommend the outfitters to work with and the units to apply for.

I don't look at it as paying for him to do the paperwork, though that is a nice side benefit. I look at it at getting all his expertise on outfitters, quality of units, and knowledge of point systems and how many points it takes for each unit, to make sure I apply for the right states and units.

He has talked me out of applying for several tags for various reasons, which all made sense. So yeah, I pay fees, but i get expertise and I don't apply for tags that don't make sense for what I want to do.

Well worth it in my opinion.

I ran into a guy who worked for a company called Rolling Bone Outfitters. I hear they do a good job but haven't used them myself. Maybe check out their website.

I can't find the draw. Do you have a web site? Doesn't come up when I google it. To apply for 5 states with Cabela's will run about $1,200 per year. I have always been a DIY hunter. I'm wondering if I would be money ahead if I saved the $1,200 and hired a guide every 5 yr.

I would guess a lot of the $1200 is state fees, correct? Are you saying you would just hunt Oregon and not apply to other states?

$1,200 is all fees. Cabela's fees would run about $500 for 5 states applying for deer and antelope. I bow hunt every year because I can get decent hunts. I miss rifle hunting and as you know Oregon is tough to get quality tags for mule deer and antelope. My last antelope tag took 16 years and my last rifle mule deer tag took 20 years. I'm 57 years old and would like to do some rifle hunting while I can still get up the hills. Don't earn enough to go guided every year. So am trying to decide if the best use of my money is to apply for many states or save it and go guided every 5-6 years and hunt Oregon only in between. I do enjoy doing things myself but would like a few quality hunts while still youngish.

I can tell you Jordan has me building points to get a great mule deer tag with an outfitter with 1-2 points. I can get an elk with a great outfitter for about 6 to 8 points.

If you call him before the end of October you can still get WY points for this year as you can purchase til 10/31.

FWIW, I am in the same boat as you - trying to get a good hunt without waiting for 15 years. I am pretty excited about what we are working towards.

FYI, WTA, which is who Cabela's sold TAGS and Trophy Adventures to, has a conflict of interest as the owner of WTA owns some outfitting companies....That is part of the reason I moved on from them. I want truly independent advice.

wow $1200 to fill out applications is steep. Those services are designed for people that have more money than time. I would put the money saved towards your hunt or optics and do your own research. I apply to multiple states it's not that hard to research what your looking for.

I think what he is saying is that the $1200 includes the state fees. I agree it is a lot to pay of not.

I use, epic outdoors...$500 apply unlimited states...I put in for bighorn everywhere I can...
