what would you do?

I just ordered what I thought was an x-bolt stalker long range in 7 rem mag with the 1:8 twist barrel for what I thought was a great price

BUT a problem popped up, browning used the exact same manufactures part number and UPC number for the new 1:8 twist barrels as last years 1:9.5 twist barrels so the rifle I got was a 1:9.5 twist that the seller actually believed was the 1:8 twist

My intended purpose was a dual purpose rifle-- hunting out to 600 yards and target shooting out to 1000 yards--I was amped on getting to try the new heavy weight .284 bullets but not sure If I would actually use them for hunting or just for target

here is my question I have to answer for my self--but what would you do??

the seller is offering me 3 choices

#1--to refund me 100% of what I paid ($630) for the rifle and send me a pre-paid return label to return the rifle--I would be out $30 for FFL transfer and colorado CBI fees

#2, the seller told me he would be loosing about $100 in shipping fees and profit if I return the rifle for a full refund so he offered for me to keep the 1:9.5 twist rife and to give me $100 back on my credit card (lowering the cost down to $530) and I would not loose the $30 FFL/CBI fees I have paid as I would keep the rifle

#3 the seller offered to send me a pre-paid return label to return the rifle with the wrong twist rate and then I could pay him an additional $145 (effectively making the 1:8 twist rifle a total of $775, but I would loose the $30 FFL/CBI fees I have paid) to special order/back order the correct 1:8 twist rifle from Browning BUT he said that Browning would not give him a tentative production/ship date for the back order rifle

also if I keep the current rifle I can file for the $50 rebate from browning bringing the total out of pocket down to $480 for the x-bolt stalker long range 1:9.5 rifle

even though I was stoked to play with heavies in this rifle (and be one of the first production rifles with a 1:8 twist 7 rem mag) -- I'm leaning towards taking the cash back and the rebate from browning as it would be $325 more to get the faster twist rate barreled rifle and I'm not sure it will make that much difference at the distances I'm wanting to shoot

what think you? what would you do??

by the way, the seller has been more than apologetic and more than gracious to go out of his way to try to fix the problem at hand including taking back and refunding the full cost on an internet rifle sale-- he has definitely won future business from me and I am glad I chose him to purchase this rifle from as it could have been a huge fiasco where I had to fight tooth and nail to try to get the issue resolved ---kudos to him

Talk to Steve Davis at HAMMER BULLETS!! We are shooting their 131grain Hammer Hunter bullets out of a 7WSM with a 1-9.5 twist at 3330 FPS. You may be close with your REM7 :) T.P.
Actually, forget what I said earlier. Don't buy the extra barrel, just use the refund and rebate to buy a bunch of Steve's bullets. Be careful, though- they're addictive and before you know it you'll be buying different calibers for all your rifles!

I was toying with shooting the 155gr HH bullets from the 1:8 twist--- with the 1:9.5 twist I would need to stay about 4000 msl to make sure they were stable, the 143's seem to show stability down to arounf 900 msl, the 131's would definitely work-- i normally hunt between 6000-11000 msl BUT I do go to alaska every once in anwhile for hunting and would like to make sure my bullets are stable there at sea level too if possible--- the 131 HH kills me in my head, I run 130 grain bullets in my 270 win so it's hard for me to run the same weight in my 7 rem mag for some reason (mental block) even thought hey are much faster from a 7rem mag than a 270 win-- its a 26" barrel so if I keep it it should get some good velocity
With a $325 swing and a wait to get the faster twist, I'd keep it and order a 1:8 twist for about $325-$350. Then while I was waiting for the barrel, I'd see how good the factory barrel shoots. If good, keep shooting it and rebarrel when it wears out. If not, re-barrel sooner.
nevr thought of that aspect-- $350-500 for a "custom" barrel

by the way-- if you ever have the opportunity to buy from g4gguns.com -- he is a man of his words and stands behind not only his words and promises but his company, i will buy more from him in the future for sure--I am in no way tied to his company in any way, just giving him a shot out for being a good person

I wouldnt worry about the lighter bullets, I have a friend that used 120 barnes in a 7 STW to kill 7 elk from 300 to 650 yards all 1 shot kills
and my son used the 110 barnes in a 270 to kill 4 elk
The Hammers i just tried shot good with little load dev.

Not to sound like a dick, but I wouldn't give 2 craps about his profit margins... If I ordered a 1:8 twist rifle, he'd better send it back and get me a 1:8 twist rifle. It's neither party's fault, but he should have sent it back immediately when he found out it was wrong, and called Browning or whatever distributor he ordered it from, and had them send him what he ordered for you.

Just because someone orders you something, doesn't mean you're obligated to keep it, even if it's not what you ordered. The distributor (or manufacturer) that flubbed this one up should be eating all the shipping fees.

I started off the thread where MudRunner's at.

First think is (if you haven't) measure the twist yourself, only way you'll know what you've got for sure. Possibility exist it's not 1:9.5 either.

Second how much magazine have you got to work with, or are you planning single loading.

The Hammer's load and shoot well.

Yes its 9.5 twist...I measured it when I got home while cleaning the bore that's how I knew it was wrong.
yes..the xbolt has a long mag (1 of the reasons I bought it over a tikka)

Mudrunner, he is willing to get me the right gun BUT not for the same price ( i would have to pay $145 more) because browning increased their price by several hundred dollars on the new fast twist rate barrels apparently his price with no profit on the 1:8 twist rifle is $775 ( which is what he offered to sell it to me for) browning's suggested retail is $980, so he would sell it to me for $200 less than what browning suggests....it is really brownings fault as they should never have used the same upc/part number for the 1:8 twist as the 1:9.5twist rifles.
Go check out their website, all the hells canyon LR rifles are the same way--- heck, some other guys may be in the same boat with a $1200 or $1800 hells canyon rifle and not know it ( as they changed to fast twist rate this year also but are still using the same upc/part number too)....supposedly the only way to tell without actually measuring is that the new fast twist rate barrels are stamped with the cartridge and twist rate-- old ones just have the cartridge....
The vendor ordered this rifle in 2018 and received it in August of 2018 from browning thinking it was the fast twist rate rifle as he ordered using the upc/part number on brownings website...browning sent a 2017 old twist rate rifle to him.
I do not expect the guy to lose $ due to brownings screw up, and you know browning doesn't care, they did say he could get on a back order list for the new rifle at the new price but that's it.
With any internet gun sale they always throw the "terms of sale" out there but no one reads them or understands them...every internet gun sale is "final non-returnable" so I feel this vendor is going out of his way to make it right-- he could have told me to pound sand as I had already accepted shipment and went through the ffl transfer process--if you read my 1st post he is also willing to pay for shipping back to him and give me a full refund (including shipping) on my cc if I want it, that was one of the options.

Like mudrunner, at first I was pretty upset when I found out, then I shot him an email and he actually responded to me at 11pm hhis time to tell me he would call browning in the morning and call me back with options he also told me right off the bat that he would give me a full refund if I wanted to send it back .
I feal the vendor is making it right and trying to fix brownings mistake.

Keep it and bank the cash for a good part of a custom barrel. If the current barrel shoots the lighter bullets well, you have some play time before you replace the barrel and get a custom barrel with the probability of doing better than the factory barrel.
