Armorers bench vise

Most vise bodies are cast metal and China has the market cornered on cheap cast metal for nearly every use. See where all the reloading press frames come from... There are some that come from India but not like the numbers we get in from China.

Brownells sells the Multi-Vise but at $299.99 it is horrendously over priced. I use another version of this style but I can't find the supplier right now. I'll look on my PC tonight for the link. I think I paid under $100.00 ($89.00) for one like the Brownells but nicer and could be removed from the pedestal and flipped 90 degrees. There is also the Shop Fox version which Midway and others sell but it's not quite as heavily built as the Multi-Vise.

The link is not on my PC at home so I'll keep looking as I like this vise a lot better than the other variations. I have 3 at this point in time so I don't have to keep running from bench to bench when I need a vise.

first of all, if your really going to do gun work, you will need several vises. the versa vise is available from several places (google it) and is really handy, but not made to do "heavy" stuff, bbl work, etc. any GOOD bench vise will work, just get soft jaw pads for it.

MTBULLET,

I'm glad you posted that suggestion since that was the vise I was trying to remember to suggest above. Thank you.

This vise will handle the majority of work which most gunsmiths get involved with. When the barrels get bigger and longer or you're working with the CheyTac actions or .50 BMG barrels, I switch to a vise better suited to the size and weight of the project.

I use the overpriced soft jaws from Brownells if I don't have time to build them for myself.

Regards.

I totally agree. The Versa vise and Versa Cradle can handle a multitude of jobs, but you'll still need a stout bench vise (4" or 5" Reed, Wilton, or Columbia) to handle the bigger jobs. When it comes to padding the jaws, I use 4" x 4" plywood or 1/4" rubber pads, but everyone has their own preference when it comes to padding.
