Looking at taking my Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag, and getting some work done.
Ideally would have a new barrel (prefer the Bull barrel) and trigger.
So what is the consensus for barrel choice for hunting?
Like you, I have a Wife, mortgage, kids and bills, so I'm looking for the best value for the money.
Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks!

A Wilson or X-Caliber done by Ragged Hole barrels...it'll be your cheapest option and still good quality.

Pac-nor does a great job for a reasonable price. They are around $600 plus shipping costs if you don't add anything like fluting or a brake. That includes truing the action. I used them for my last rebarrel job and was very happy with the results.

Go for a Remage configured barrel, plenty to choose from. #6 contour/Sendero is a good compromise

I would recommend getting the action trued / blueprinted in addition to the new barrel and trigger. I have a Krieger barrel on my M700 7mm mag semi custom and have been very happy with it. I like Timney triggers on hunting rifles, you can order it pre set at 2 lbs from the factory.
I recently had a barreled action built in .223 rem by Alamo Precision Rifles in Hurst, TX. These guys are great to deal with. Check them out and give them a call and they can give you recommendations.

+1 on the Remage set up. I did a 7mm on a Remingtion action, lapped the lugs myself (you could have s smith true the face of the action and lap the lugs for $100 or less). I put a Criterion on it and it shoots amazing. Jim at Northland Shooters Supply is good to work with.

Dont do a bull barrel for hunting. I did on my first custom and the whole thing is literally 14lbs. Packing that on my pack in trips is miserable. Doable but not lovely. My second custom I'm figuring out a load now for I did a heavy sporter and its way lighter. Learn from my mistake haha

For barrel, I went with xcaliber on both. (Savage action, tikka action). My savage is in .300 and its right at 1/2 moa. My tikka I'm still working on load.

I say a number 4 brux for contour size. I think any of the aftermarket match grade barrels are going to run about the same price you can figure about 300-350 for a good match grade stainless barrel. Proably about $250 for chamber and true job. That's what my local smith that I talked to charges.

26" Bartlein #3b fluted.

My 7RM weighs in right at 10# with scope and cheek pad. Very comfortable to carry, and very accurate.

5 shots @ 806 (180 Hybrid @ 2996fps)

Any of the big names will do you a great job. I have one or two custom projects left before I'm done and I'll be sending the work to Benchmark Barrels.

You may well find as good a work out there by any number of the top guys but you won't get better or equal work for anywhere near the same money.

You will be satisfied with the work they do or they'll eat it.

Last I checked they'd do the barrel install, true the action chamber etc all for around 800.00. I have yet to ever hear of anyone not completely satisfied wit their work or the price they paid to get it done.

Is that price including the barrel!? Pretty impressive if it is, there is no beating that price.
