I'm interested in any information regarding mule deer hunting. Thinking units 1 through 6. Not looking for an ultimate trophy hunt, just a fun camp hunt for a few old guys. I have to research maps yet but thought maybe some of you guys with experience in that area could help steer me in the right direction. Also is there a fair amount of public land there? Thanks in advance for your help!

Take a good look at each unit on the G&F website Hunt Planner section and you should be able to answer your question yourself. Region A opens late in the year after all the other regions are closed. The whitetails are rutting then and generally you can also at least catch the start of the mule deer rut, which makes both species more vulnerable and the Region tag is good for one buck of either type.

Area 6. Between Osage and Upton. That Skull Creek RD North out of Osage (which is on Hwy 16). A ways out of Osage on the top of the hill there is a road that turns west toward Upton. Its part of Thunder Basin NGL. Miles and miles of public land and walk in areas. Plenty of deer, lots of trails and two track roads off the main dirt road.

There are some good bucks there if you look.

Great information and thanks so much for being willing to share it. I can certainly understand locals not being overjoyed with others coming in. You are to be commended for your information sharing. Thanks!

Don't mention it, there are plenty of deer.

I should have said the road you take west off of skull creek road is East Upton Road or FS 914.

Any way there are plenty of nice places to camp. A GPS Wyoming chip would be nice, baring that stop in the Forest Service office in Newcastle and pick up a Thunder Basin NGL map or the BLM office and pick one up for Newcastle, both will cover the area I mentioned.

Keep me in mind when you get set up, I'll stop by for a visit.

A friend of mine is out there now fishing and scouting for deer. He talked to a warden yesterday and got some good info. He just signed up for the 7 day trial on an app that shows private land with owner's names, public land etc. He is over near Dayton right now but will be going over into the area where you spoke about late this next week. He is going to move to Wyoming. He lived there many years ago. Our hunt won't happen until 2019, the good Lord willing. Hopefully we will meet up with you!
