700 mountain rifle

A friend of mine has fallen on some hard times. He is offering to sell several rifles. The one I am most interested in is a model 700 mountain SS 308. While I do like this rifle is there any difference in this and a 700 sps with a bell and Carlson stock added to it? Any help from those with experience on these two would be helpful. I am not looking for any kind of long range performance from this. Longest area id take this to would be 250-300 yards.

I think the mountain has a stainless fluted barrel.

As far as I know it only came with the black with grey webbing bell and Carlson. He bought it two years ago from buds for about $900. He will sell it to me for 700.

I have a 700 mountain in 7-08. It's a 22" barrel with what they call "mountain contour", dropped in a black with white and grey speckled style bell and Carlson stock. The barrel on mine it not fluted, but it's a very light contour and don't think you would want to. Mine has had some work to it with an accurizing job on the action and bolt, along with some bolt fluting and a trigger tech trigger dropped in, but it shoots sub MOA with Nosler trophy grade 140's. Weighs just over 6lb. I have mine mounted with a swaro z3 4-12x50 in Talley rings and it's 7lb 3oz. Handy little package.

Pretty sure the only differences between the two models are:

700 SPS-cheap synthetic stock and carbon steel barrel
700 Mountain SS-Bell and Carlson stock and stainless steel barrel.
I've owned both and horribly regret letting my mountain ss in .280 go in a trade.

I have a mountain SS. The only difference between it an a SPS with B&C stock is the barrel. it is pencil thin to save on weight and is fluted. The pencil barrel is nice but mine is not a long range shooter. I get around .75-1MOA with reloads and anywhere from 1-1.5MOA with store bought. I love the rifle for hunting the woods. Anything under 300 yards and you are in business. Very light weight to carry. Honestly, it is what I use most of the time unless I sit on our one field which has a 450 yard shot opportunity and I use my more long range setup.

Assuming your buddies rifle shoots well, and does not have a ton of barrel wear/throat burn or tons of shots down the tube, I would have zero reservations picking it up for ~700$. However, my factory trigger SUCKED! Lightest I could get it to was 4.5lbs. It had zero creep though but it was heavy. 125$ drop in Timney trigger fixed that issue.

I have a late 80's vintage 30-06 mtn rifle, blued with walnut.

Mine is very accurate for such a lightweight barrel - consistent 3/4" groups at 100. It was my primary rifle for years when I was starting out hunting, and I shot many deer with it up until 2006 when I went stainless/synthetic. I highly recommend the earlier ones, so try to find out what vintage yours is. Rem QC lately is not the same.

Find out how it shoots. If it shoots well, $700 is a good deal and youre helping your buddy out in tough times. Its a win win.

Mountain rifle has a mountain contour barrel. It's lighter that the sps. Usually they are a little more finicky with load selection too.

I have two of the older version Remington mountain rifles....noodle barrel..
1....is still a 2506...second hand...kid shoots really good reloads...if i get it out of my kids hands I do okay...kid with first Idaho antlerless...300 yards...one shot drop....
2...same everything except for chambering...second hand....was a factory 280 rem...rechambered to 280AI....shoots reloads well...just haven't put a lot og rounds thru it to make it better....shoot fine in timber areas or out to 400 or so.... just haven't had time to go beyond....100 yard whitetail...
