I picked up a 7.5 lb 6.5 saum for my son. We bought it as the deal was too good to pass up. He's only 10 but already shoots a 20gauge youth 870 with 3" 2's no problem and his sisters 7/08 AI with 120s. The rifle will have a brake but was wondering if anyone has tried a lighter load with 120s or 130s? The smith we picked it up from was running H1000 and 61 grains and said minimal recoil but want to be on the safe side. Thanks

I developed a load last year for my SST which is a Saum variant that has very low recoil and shot bugholes. 42 grains of H4895 behind a 130 ELDM or Berger at around 2900'.

If it has a brake already, try it. You will be surprised at how little it will recoil with a full power load under a 140gr bullet.
I have shot several, and other variations. I have a 6.5SS and run it HOT. It weighs just over 10# with a heavy S&B on it. Pushes a 150 SMK @ 3160fps. It is always surprising after shooting braked 7RM and .300WMs to get behind it and let one fly. I always forget how light the recoil is for such a fast moving 150gr. bullet.
I loaded for a buddy's 6.5 SAUM. It was 8.5# all in with scope. Pushes a 140 Berger @ 3150fps, and again, recoil is a joy.

It's not always just a case of the load and bullet weight. In many instances the stock fit will have just as much impact if not more in connection with the comfort of shooting any load. Get the rifle to fit your son properly then work on the load.
I use a 130 grain class bullets all the time in several 6.5mm rifles including the RSAUM and it is mild when using the slower powders like H-1000. Barrel length figures into this part of the equation. If you're using a short or shortened barrel I would run a different powder.

You could run it 3-4 grains more, say 3050'. 42 was a mild load but I shot 3 shots in .014" (270 size hole) so I stopped there
