Quality Wool

Whatever heavy wool garment you buy be sure to buy it at least one size larger.
Then wash it in HOT water (no Woolite soap this time and never detergent) and dry well in Medium heat to shrink them to make them more wind-resistant and warmer.

Gosh man I have been down this road and I guess it could work if you are hunting in specific conditions. It would be good to know where you are hunting, average number of miles per day and exertion level.

My first lite set has been great under conditions ranging from 80 degrees to -20 degrees.

You guys may already know this; Woolrich garments are made out of the country. The last couple items I bought said made in either Vietnam or Bangladesh. Not what they used to be. I live about 5-6 miles from their factory and have relatives that work there. They said the company is down sizing and think they could go belly up. I hope not but that's what happens when you start putting out inferior products. Anyone know who made the wool outfits the famous white tail tracking Benoit family wore? It was green plaid wool outfits. Happy new year to all.

They wore Beagle which is now out of business. Johnson is what I used before I bought Beagle. It is what I'd buy to replace an item when I need too. You just need a waterproof spray. I used scotchguard for years but there are far better products today(or so I'm told) The Orange body camo jacket as far as I know there isn't a direct replacement. As far as wool goes at least. I would highly suggest the double Mackinaw style of jacket if your moving through snow covered terrain. The double layer will keep the water out alot longer

Having lived and hunted in western Pennsylvania for decades before moving to Nevada I can say that wet Woolrich hunting coats are HEAVY.

My buddy, his dad and brother all used them and at one time or another came home with a soaked and heavy coat. PLUS the **** lining was COTTON! ("Cotton kills" is a well known warning about winter clothing choices.)

I see many things being made cheaper & cheaper but the price goes upper & upper! Seems the consumer can never win. Happy new year, and shoot straight.

IMHO wool that has been blended with nylon is best because:
1. it is stronger
2. it is more resistant to shrinkage
3. moths will leave it alone!
4. it is (usually) less expensive than 100% wool

I buy my wool at Army surplus stores. It's very affordable. I primarily wea it when coyote hunting. I do wear merino wool base layers some times when backpack hunting and it works good. I think wool pants and jackets are a bit heavy for back packing. If I'm putting in a lot of miles I avoid wool because it has more friction than synthetics and I find that takes more energy.

Wool is very heavy if it gets wet !

There are now plenty of applications that can mitigate alot of the absorption issues. I grew up using scotch guard and now use camp dry with good results. Silicone spray works well also.
I have beagle wear that should last me the rest of my years. Provided I don't grow anymore. They are gone unfortunately.

Hey cool i live right near the piper airport in dunnstown! Didn't know there were any guys local to me on here

Swandri or Icebreaker out of NZ are both very good. Sitka has Merino base layers and Kuiu also supply a Merino mix. Swandri will ship to the USA and it is a very good product. It wasn't that long ago that every Kiwi hunter had at least one Swandri Bush Shirt.
