Found this place quite back accident. Skimmed through a variety of posts and it looked like a place where some knowledgeable people hang out. I started getting interested in long range shooting as way to control the hog population on my ranch in Central Texas. I'm pretty much hooked now....so much so that I built my first custom rifle chambered in 300 WM last year. Anyway...just wanted to say hi.

Welcome, Brett. I'm in Houston but hunt up in Warren, TX. Like the others, I also offer free hog control. I'll even bring the cold beers for after...

400 yes. 800 would be tough. The problem at night is getting a correct range and then identification. PM me if you want to talk about it.

Yeah that's what I have concluded from my research of thermal imaging scopes. It's been really frustrating....my setup is such that I can shoot hogs out to 800+ yds off my porch. All of our shooting takes place at night because it's rare to see a hog during daylight hours....except in the winter. I have lighted bait holes on a sendero we shoot down but the lights are solar powered and not very bright. The scope I use on my rig is a NF ATACR 7-35 X 56 with illuminated reticle. The problem is that when I have the reticle set on the lowest illumination setting it is still too bright and makes it extremely difficult to see the hogs at that distance....especially when they are dark colored hogs. Other than that I love the scope.

At what range at night can you shoot using your current light and scope set up.
If the hogs are light colored I could make 800 yd shots. Black or red hogs....which is what shows up most of the time....forget it.
I have a NF ATACR 5-25 X 56 F2 scope on my Rem 700 LR which has an analog illuminated reticle and it works great. I have it adjusted as low as you can get it and still see it but it's perfect for night shooting. I am considering putting it on my custom rifle but I really hate giving up the magnification.

WOW. I think your best bet is to just add some more light.
Yep...that's what I've been working on. I still haven't found a solar charged light that is bright enough. I've even tried a 12 V atv light bar hooked to a car battery which works great but is impractical.
