QD Mount suggestions?

I'm looking for the highest quality QD Mount system for long range shooting with a bolt action. Or is a QD mount system mutually exclusive with a precision rifle? I saw a few posts on the forums but each only had a few replies.

Thanks for your input!

I don't know much about QD mount systems, but I don't think they are a great solution for dedicated long range rifles.

Once you start setting up a rifle to shoot the distances you seem to intend, the mounting of the scope and it's alignment to the barrel and leveling of its reticle can get critical. Once you have all of that setup for one rifle and then move the scope to another long range rifle, and back and forth, it may be impossible to duplicate those settings. This is because the scope itself may have to be realigned in the rings each time because the rails, on each scope, and their alignment to the barrels, will probably be different enough to cause issues with how level the reticle is, etc.

Also, if you to have to move the scope in the rings, future scope slippage might happen, or any number of other things. These small changes can cause havoc with long range accuracy and it will be hard to diagnose. You might find yourself wasting a lot of bullets an barrel life at the range just trying to diagnose and get things working the same after moving the scope.

If I were building a pair of long range rifles for target and hunting. I would work a budget so there would be two dedicated scopes as well.

Just some thoughts.

Not the answer I WANTED to hear but a great answer. Thanks

My favorite is Bobro. Also have a LaRue, and it is solid, just not as nicely engineered. My experience with both has been limited to using them each on separate rifles, but in taking them on and off the rifle, so long as it goes back in the same position on the pic rail, it will retain zero. After set up, I have never had to move the scope in the rings.

Well it is an opinion. And here's another. Since it seems like you will end up with 2 rifles and 1 scope for a while at this point anyway. Being able to move the scope from rifle to rifle might not be a bad idea in the short term. It would allow you to evaluate the scope on both rifles. You may find that you only like the scope on one rifle or not at all. If you only intend to move it a few times for the next year, things might work out well.

I wouldn't try to get involved with some QD systems that allow you to move the scope daily. I think these are more for tactical rifles where the scope needs to often be remove for storage or transport and then reconnected to the same rifle. Maybe try some rings like the Leupold PRW that have two screws that clamp the ring to the base. They allow the scope to be remove and replaced fairly easily without messing with the rings scope screws. I use these, but lots of other rings have the same design. If you used identical rails on both rifles and have them bedded so that they will be fairly straight and level. You may be able to move the scope without too much fuss. Then maybe next year after you have evaluated the scope needs on the rifles, then pull out the cash for another scope.

Welcome to long range shooting....

Link to some Leupold PRW rings. i think since these are so well priced that Leupold may be discontinuing them in the future. Great rings though.

Thank you for the comments and the welcome. Great community on this site!

I would only want a QD for switching between two rifles each time I go to the range for about 9-10 months each year. My 204 Ruger and my 6.5x47. I would eventually switch the scope over to my 7 SS, but it would be exclusively used for the 7 SS for about 2 or 3 straight months up through the end of hunting season - so no QD needed there.

At the range it would be a pain to have to re-zero every time i switched between the 204 & 6.5 but i think that's a better option than dropping way more on a 2nd scope.

My 204 does currently have a Vortex Crossfire II but the quality of that glass pales in comparison to the new scope i just bought today.

Take a look at American defense mounts. If you have a picitiany rail on your receiver it is easy to move. I have a couple of their mounts and I have been very happy with them.

Thanks for the feedback - American Defense is very tempting. I know Spuhr mounts have an excellent reputation but are of course very expensive. I'm wondering if this QD mount is worth $500:

If it actually holds zero, then it's worth $500 to me, as it seems no other QD mount can truly hold zero (or even 1/4 MOA of zero) after repeatedly taking it off.

Does anybody have any experience with Spuhr QD mounts? Or any QD mount that actually holds zero within 1/4 MOA after being removed, put on another rifle, and then put back on the original?

I'm curious about this. My Bobro and LaRue hold zero when taken off and put back on same rifle in same pic rail position. But, i was always under the impression that if put on a different rifle, they'd need to be rezeroed, and then rezeroed if returned to original rifle. Unless the two rifles are same caliber, exactly the same in every dimension and shooting precisely the same mv with identical ammo, it seems there is no way around rezeroing for each rifle (regardless of mount). Does anyone have experienceto the contrary?

Even without adding to a separate rifle, I'm still impressed if they truly hold zero.

QD mounts generally don't (I'm basing this opinion solely on various YouTube reviews.)

Iam using Leoupold qds on a leaopold 20moa picatinny rail both the base and rings are steel ,i dont know how others hold up but iam surprised how well my set up has held zero with out any noticeable shift in poi

Do you simply remove the scope and reinstall it on the same rifle or do you install it on a 2nd rifle and then reinstall it on the 1st (with it holding zero on each rifle, after predetermined adjustments of course)?

Nope only same riffle you change riffle no matter what scope qds you use you'll have adjust it.But.... when i removed my big Hubble minox X5ix25x56mm when i had a muzzle brake installed on 300 rum the scope held zero
