270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Well BJD to resurrect this epic thread...going on an Elk hunt this Friday...decided to use the 170 EOL Bergers.

Thanks for all your help to get us a reasonable priced 270 hot rod.

I am done...the 170 Bergers are doing 8 S-D @ 3225fps.

Shot this this morning at a hair over 200 yrds...yes...I missed one...

Long time thread....thanks BJD...

Got my bull...

170 Berger EOL...

The bullet did not exit...

The bullet "liquified" the internals...

The 6x6 never took a step...

Pic is of the opposite of the entry wound...

Nice bullet...

Pic of what is left...

Great bull let's see some other pics of him!

The 270-300 was quiet this year as it was being restocked ina nice McMillan Gamewarden stock.

I have a Wyoming bull tag for 2018 though!

Honestly, if there were more offerings for high BC .270 bullets, I'd build a 270WSM or 270 Wby. Unfortunately, there's not and the 6.5 and 7mm market have that cornered.

Seriously?

How much more do you want? 6.5 ? You must be a 6.5CM shooter? :) 7mm...What case? The most efficient case to push a 7mm 195gr is bigger than a 7RM...more recoil...

Read this thread that I got hammered in...

https://www.longrangehunting.com/threads/7mm-rem-mag-vs-300-win-mag.198583/page-3

The 170 Berger had the same wind drift and same energy on target with much less drop than the 195 7mm and the 215 300WM...

What is your thought?

Sorry Big Jake for the Hijack...:)

No, I just think it's stupid to hinge a whole rifle build on one bullet available from a single manufacturer.

I agree..good point...however, Bullets.com going out of business sale had the 170gr 270 Bergers on sale for .33 cents a piece...

After that sale...I need to buy another barrel...:) It is nice having a barrel nut...

But I think if more manufacturers grab onto the faster twist rates, Browning is doing it, the bullets will come. Eventually it's going to get where everything needs to be shot in a long action.

I'm having my new 270 WSM built on a long action. Never really understood the fixation on short actions and the attendant OAL limitations. I'm going with an OAL that keeps the Matrix 165 or of the case body and a 1-10 barrel because it's what I had.

I am glad I was steered to this thread. I read most of the first 3 pages and several posts between page 4 and 40. I have learned that my idea was not so revolutionary. I like the 270 caliber. do not get me started on 6.5MM and 7MM bores. I will make his short, I do not like them. I like the 0.257" and 0.277" bores with heavy twist rates. I like the thought of a 270-264 Win Mag. Just a 0.013" expansion to the neck and it would be great for me. I would love to work with that parent case. I would use the cheaper of the two cases I am looking at. the 7MM Rem Mag is the same case; I have a huge pile of that useless cartridge case that I was going to turn into a bunch of 264 Win Mag when I was going to make a long range 264 Win Mag.. now I want a long range 270 made with the 7MM Rem/264 Win Mag Case. there seems to be some controversy as to which came first. Ironically the 7MM fans are dead wrong. the 264 win (1958) is the parent case for the 7MM Rem (1962). Now that I know that there is a 270-300 win mag: I think I will pioneer the 270-264 win mag or 270-7MM rem mag. I think a 1:8" twist, 26" #5 taper (.750" muzzle), on a model 70 or Sako A7 with a Chet Brown "pounder" sporter stock would be the perfect rig for me when I get to my new place up north. I reckon I am going to hear from the 7MM guys and the 6.5MM guys..
