I am just wondering what is the proper way to buy and sell on this site to be sure the whole process goes smoothly and no one gets ripped off.
I seen where someone had mentioned that he sent money for a scope and never received it. Some members razzed him about it.
How do you know whether it is legitimate and what is the process to be sure you don't get ripped off.
Advice please.

I just deal with folks who have been forum members for a long time and whose primary purpose on the forum is not to sell stuff. Then for stuff like optics, you can pay thru PayPal and add 3% to the seller to cover PayPal purchase insurance.

You can ask for a photo of the item with your name and date written on a piece of paper in from of it. That just proves that they guy actually has the item listed. Not that he will actually sent it to you...

In the end, if it sounds fishy, it probably is and if the price is too good to be true.. well you know.

Also, in the Classifieds, there is a Buyer & Seller feedback section. You can search for the sellers name there to see what if any feedback there is.

Never pay through PayPal using the "friends and family" option. Yes, it can save on fees but you lose any and all buyer protection.

Admins just added a stickied FAQ. I haven't looked at it, but I bet there's some good info there. At least it would be a place to start.

paypal F&F is fine if you trust the seller if not +3% covers you as a buyer. Any big ticket item you should ask for a tracking# the seller should offer it. Also i exchange e-mails with the seller.

I noticed that a lot of people selling rifles or scopes may only have a few posted replies.
Not a long history on this forum.
Thanks for your help guys.

Also, a few other options...
1. IF possible, I ask their location, and since my company has locations/branches/salespeople nationally. I ask if they can drop by and see the item and let me know if it is as described...Most honest sellers here say sure. I have had two not respond to this request on other sites at all and that told me it was bogus.
For the last Leupold scope i got, I sent my salesperson in Vancover WA the money, he picked up the scope, and shipped to me...
Of course this only works with Nationwide contacts, but it also helps flush out someone who does not want to be found even if you dont have national representation
2, You can always find a qualify FFL to talk to in their area, and then require the individual to take gun to that one. The ffl will call u and let you know the gun it legitimate, look it over and ship. I did that on another site, and it cost me an extra $25 for a gun purchased in Oregon to be viewed by the store owner. The seller was paying the shipping so i got the gun, felt good about the sale, and it only cost me an extra $25...better than loosing $1250
3. Lastly there are a lot of quality people here on LRH and in all parts of the country., After you get the city/state..ask if anyone near there that could view and confirm the product. May not work all the time, but many quality people here to help rather than rip off.
The buddy system here could work..

And as said before, just because they have 100+ posts doesn't mean they are legitimate..look at their posts, and see if they are bogus posts to build the numbers...
also look at the buyer/seller feedback.
