I don't understand what's so different about that rifle. Sure it doesn't look like classic Win or Rem, but we'd have a boring world if all rifles looked the same.

I understand they're well made rifles but aside from my thoughts on it's looks it doesn't look like it's easily top loaded, and like earlier stated I tend to favor drop plate rifles. I'm not saying I'd never own one, but not as my do-all rifle like described in my initial post.

Well, it's done. Placed the order for the M70 Extreme Weather. I was dealing with a trade in so I was somewhat limited in what I could get my hands on. I couldn't get a Sako, or the semi-customs. My choices were the Wby/Howa, Browning, Ruger, Bergara, or Winchester. I gave the Ruger a fair shake this time, both the gunsmith there and the owner were both very complimentary of them but the 6.5 was unavailable and I didn't care for another 308. I handled the Ruger (FTW) for a good half hour, but my gut told me Winchester. In the end it was the unavailability of the Ruger in 6.5 that made my decision.
I also picked up the scope that will be riding, a Bushnell Elite Tactical 2.5-16. It's a mil-dot reticle with moa turrets but I think it will be fine for out to 500.

Rifleman, I know you've already made your decision, but I wanted to throw this out in case anyone else is searching and runs across the thread. I'm a long time Ruger and Browning bolt guy, with a Tikka or CZ thrown in for good measure from time to time. Last year I started down the Howa/Vanguard path, and I'm up to 3 (2 x 6.5CM and a 7RM) Each is a subMOA shooter. The HACT 2-stage trigger on the current models is not bad, but I've replaced all of mine with Timney's for personal preference. I've also moved all of mine to Bell and Carlson stocks with full bedding blocks--even the Range Certified 7RM. The Range Certified comes in a pillar bedded B&C, I prefer the full bedding blocks. Weight-wise, the Howa's are right with the full weight Winchesters, slightly heavier than CZ550s and Rugers, quite a bit heavier than the Winchester Featherweights and Browning X-bolts. Smooth actions, well made, great shooters.

If I've learned anything after my last new Remington, it's that I'm probably not missing much by leaving them out of consideration from now on. I know I had initially considered one at the outset of this search. This new Winchester has reinforced my opinion. No disrespect to any of big green's disciples, but it seems all you are buying is a platform to build upon.

The 5R series rifles are not standard... They're the only factory rifles I'll buy from Rem expecting accuracy. All other factory 700's I buy are for donor rifles.
Also, not sure if you know this, but for quite a few years Winchester went through their own barrel, accuracy, and QC issues, same as Remington...

I shoot the 140 in this same rifle, fits fine in the magazine.

Well, if it wasn't for the internet I wouldn't have the very tiring "job" of doing so. Disinformation spreads lightning speed these days. I'm not even affiliated with Remington, but I'm just trying to correct disinformation, because there's so much of it out there already, and I feel it's all of our part to be as honest and truthful as possible. The world is so full of bullsh!t as it is, we need to break through that to be the best and most straight-forward forum on the net where people know they can trust the info they receive here.
Just get a Savage in 6.5 CM and be done with it.

It is done with. Nothing wrong with Savage, at least none that I owned.
To be fair with your earlier point, yes I was aware Winchester went through a rough patch just as Savage did as well. That being said, Remington's quality being in the toilet save for a few variants is hardly disinformation.
I'll pose an honest question:
Are the 5R barrels hammer forged like the most every other barrel on (insert your brand)? Because of they are and they are indeed much superior to standard rifling (which many claim is the case, I have no experience with them) why not replace standard rifling in every model they make? It would almost surely benefit them to do so wouldn't it? How come somebody's got to buy the $1200 Remington before they don't have to worry if they will have to polish machine marks out of the chamber so brass will extract or send it back because it's bulging brass or just plain won't shoot worth a darn? I won't claim no one else has issues, but Remington seems to have a lot. To my way of thinking, all the bad press can do nothing but serve them a reminder to get with the program. I hope it does. Maybe five years from now I'll give them another try, but there's got to be an awful lot of happy guinea pigs before me to make it happen.
