Looking to build a 270 wsm w/ 1:8 or 1:9 twist tube. My question is, on a 700 footprint SA i can handle OAL of 3.000" with Wyatt's extended box. Is that enough to get the bullet where it needs to be with standard reamers? How are you guys setting up for this? Long actions? Custom reamers? Will a custom reamer still allow me to shoot 140's without them being crammed into the case?

Thanks in advance,

I'm not too familiar with the wsm family but it might be worth your time to talk to rich, elkoholic, on this forum about his 270 sherman shortmag. I will be building a 7SS over the saum or wsm due to COAL limits in my short action. Might be what your looking for!

I believe bigngreen has built quite a few 270wsm so it might be worth your time to send him a PM for specifics.

I'm very familiar with the WSM. The 170 will be so far in the case that the ogive will probably be inside the case neck taking up probably 1/3 or more of the case capacity if you run a SAAMI spec chamber and use the magazine. IMO,The loss of velocity will negate any BC you will likely see by using a 150 vld.

If you are set on building a rifle for the 170 you should look into a 270 Weatherby at LEAST.
I'm thinking of building a 8 twist 270 Weatherby for this bullet.

The 140vld is perfect if you want the start of the boat tail to ne at the neck/shoulder junction.

I run 150vld at 3250 fps in a 10 twist 24" barrel and it takes up some case space but it devastates everything it touches.

270 WSM M70 of mine uses 170 Bergers with an OAL of 3.115 and is 0.015 off lands. Can see how it compares with your 3.0 magazine. Had to lengthen the magazine about 0.100 to easily accommodate the OAL. Using 67gr Retumbo the accuracy node is at 3050 but it can easily be pushed to 3100. A great shooting higher SD 270 bullet using 1:8 twist, 26" barrel to deliver 1,000 lb energy out to 1300 yards or so. I think you should still be able to get 3000 or more even setting the reamer back another 0.100 to fit your magazine length.

I am fairly familiar with the wsm's. I had a 7wsm built on a long action in order to accommodate the 180 and 195 Berger. Turned out excellent I'm getting sub .25 moa with the 180 Berger @2915 fps and that combo is very polite. Used a REM 700 LA, 26" 1:8 Krieger. I was very close to doing the same with a 270 wsm for the 170 Berger but opted for a 27 nosler instead. I may regret that decision. To maximize the performance in the 270 wsm I would go with a long action all day long. That .715 bc bullet won't amount to near as much if it's stuffed to the ogive imo. A good smith will iron out and feeding issues.

Good choice on the 270Wby...…:) Just make sure that you can load it longer than 3.5" COAL

Anyways...Bullets.com is going out of business and you can get 100 .277 170 Berger EOLs for $33

Long action long action long action, my 7wsm loads are 3.125 oal with the 180 berger vld and are not close to the lands. Same thing can be done with a 270 Wsm and the 170 berger vld. Take a look at my avatar pic. That's a short mag round built on a long action 3 shot group.
