Cooper 92 6.5-284 gaining accuracy

all right looks good, what was your coal? can you get us a velocity
coal for 140 berger vld hunting was 3.08
coal for gmx 120 was 3.10
coal for eldx 143 was 3.14

58 gr retumbo br2 primer lapua brass 140 berger 3030 fps
57.5gr retumbo 143 eldx was 2960
didnt chrono the rest. I will start working on more powder charges and velocity readings. Took it for a quick trip to 1480 yards and things line up with the eldx and the berger. Once the gmx are gone I wont replace them.

Glad to hear that you got your Cooper shooting. I have been shooting my highly coveted Cooper Model 52 in 6.5x284 acquired in 2010 and used every season since. It is approaching 1000 rounds and still holding .25 MOA with no sign of any throat erosion/BTO. My load is 58gr of Retumbo, 142 JLK/VLD, Fed210M, Lapua Brass. 2975FPS/ES<12FPS. I have not had to adjust my 200 yard zero for the last 5 seasons. I think that there is a lot to be said about stocking a sufficient supply of the same lot of components.

Glad you got it to shoot, I have the same rifle and it shoots lights out. My target from Cooper indicated RL22, I tried RL23 (53.7gr) and WLR primers with the 140 VLD/EH and my Magnospeed reads 3060. My coal is 3.160, lands are at 3.170.

Great info here guys! Any load updates with the model 92? I've loaded some rounds for initial sighting in and barrel break in.

Greyfox, I've searched through alot of this site and you have the most loading info for "short" barreled 6.5-284. Thanks!

In my Remington 700 with a kreiger 30.5" barrel 1 in 8 twist, 6.5-284. shooting 143gr eldx, lapua brass (nk size only), and federal 210 primers. With 55 gr of retumbo powder my velocity was averaging 3020 fps with no high pressure signs (bullets touching the lands). So I backed down to to 53.5 gr for an average velocity of 2955, my best group so far with that charge is at .040 off the lands.

I was using 49.2 gr of rel 22 (over max load from hornady manual) with fed 215 primers and with a five shot group my velocity would spread 100fps, which at 500 plus yards make a colossal difference in trajectory, and for long range whitetail hunting, thats Unacceptable

Well the new rifle got to roast a couple coyotes and a cow elk. Although the berger hunting vld did its job with a bang flop at 200 yds after looking inside and having no trace of bullet fragments I will move to the 140 hybrid. I believe the hybrid has a thicker jacket. Only one shoulder was broke and the other just got peppered and it peppered the lungs. I dont think it would be bull elk shoulder medicine. Behind the shoulder heart and track shot yes but not bull elk shoulder at least under 200 yds. The hunting vld just shoot so dang good too. I bet the 140 hunting vld are perfect for 200lb mule deer on close shots. Hope those hybrids penetrate a little deeper before exploding.

Started working on the Cooper again today. Forster neck bushing dies and micrometer seating dies. Loaded 143 eldx on 57gr retumbo, on the 6th shot it failed to eject. I tapped the brass out and it came out easily with a cleaning rod. Inserted a new unfired lapua brass and it would not flip the brass out. I would have to use my finger to eject. After the fifth try it completely failed to eject and left it in the chamber. Had to use a cleaning rod to push the brass out. I contacted cooper and sent the rifle back. I dont want it back until its fixed. I am really starting to regret my purchase and wish I had just got a custom. We will see how cooper handles this. So far everything is good.

Hard to hear, as I have to send mine back too. It needs a new bolt because the original bolt dents the rounds in the magazine when you cycle one into the chamber.

Did you check the bottom base plate of the magazine make sure it didn't slide forward. If this is the issue, it's easily fixed. It's only press fitted and if it creeps forward this will cause the rounds to miss-feed and get dented. It a poor design, but easily remedied by opening the bottom lips with a needle nose pliers for a tighter fit.
