Any review out there for the Remington 700 AWR? Seems like a nice rifle but not sure if it's worth the money or if there are other rifles to look at in that price range. Thoughts?

I see Remington finally took my advice...Again. Still haven't gotten my free rifles yet... Hey Remington!!! I got an FFL dealer about 2 miles away...You can send them anytime. :D

For the money, I'd buy one of those over an SPS any day of the week! 416R 5R barrel, Grayboe stock, 416R stainless barrel and action... Hard to beat that for $850! Basically, it's a sporter-weight hunting version of the 5R Milspec with a Grayboe stock instead of the heavier HS Precision stock. Only thing I don't like is that they only went with 24" barrels on the magnums. If they had gone 26", it would be better. They also kept the same stupid 9.25" twist for the 7mm... They should have stepped up the game to 8" or 8.5" twist since they were modernizing their rifling to the 5R. You should still be able to shoot the new Berger 175 Elite Hunters without a problem. I also think they should have threaded the muzzle 5/8x24 to make it suppressor ready, since suppressors are becoming more and more popular, but that's just my opinion.

do you like it better than the Sako A7 roughtech series?

Yes. Comparing the 2 rifles, both of which I've never shot, and knowing how well my two 5R Milspecs perform, I'd have to go with the 700 AWR. Whoever builds Remington's 5R barrels is doing a great job so far. They're consistent, accurate, and repeatable, and are easy to cleanup, and last longer between cleanings. So until I see otherwise, anytime I see a 5R barrel on a factory 700, i"m going to trust the rifle for accuracy.

only thing I don't like is the caliber selection. I already own a decent shooting 3006 (.75-1MOA) it is my lightest rifle and what I carry in woods where shots are under 200 yards. It has a pencil thin barrel so after 3 shots groups open significantly. If I'm sitting in a blind, prone, or a stand with a shooting rail I will bring my semi-custom built savage 7mm mag which consistently shoots .5MOA but dang that rifle is heavy (has a heavier contour barrel, not quite varmint but close). I was looking for a rifle to bridge the gap between those 2 rifles. Something I can carry on some longer hikes but still shoots lights out to 500 yards. Maybe id go with the 300 win mag because I simply have never owned one but this rifle appears to be on the lighter side and that might be punishment on my shoulder. I have no desire to own a 270 nor do I want to buy another 3006. I wouldn't mind another 7mm rem mag but again...if I'm going big why not get a caliber I don't have and go for the 300 winny...

If that's the case, then that AWR in 7mmRM seems like it would fit what you're looking for with the magnum sporter contour 24" barrel.

I have both a 7mmRM and a .300WM. You're not missing anything by not owning a .300WM. They are so similar, it's crazy that people even argue about which one is "better". It all comes down to this... Similar ballistics, similar results, more recoil with the .300.

thanks. I just noticed something on the Remington website under the AWR. If you go there you will see a note near the barrel of the picture of the AWR rifle that says 5R rifling, 24 and 26in free floated barrel with 5r rifling...

hmmm wonder which is the typo...that OR down in the specifications where it shows barrel length for all the calibers.

also one final comment...you stated how the twist is not so great... what bullets would work with that twist in the 7mmRM?

Hmmm, I'm interested to know if it's a type-o as well... If they went with a 26" barrel, I would snatch one up in a heartbeat. But have a custom A-Bolt II 7mmRM with a 26" sporter barrel that I use for my main deer rifle. I might have to pickup one of these AWR's in 7mmRM to test out once I find more gainful employment and get caught up on my bills.

Berger 168 VLD or 175 Elite Hunter. Both are set for a 9" twist, and do just fine in my factory Rem 9.25" twist barrels.

The a7 rough techs are nice rifles. Sako does a good job with all their barrels, i doubt one will be better than the other accuracy wise. With the awr u get the cerakote and unlimited scope mounting options, unlike like the a7. I had a custom picatinny rail made for mine, but I like the 26" threaded muzzle. Oh and there's no comparison in triggers, the a7 is far superior

I've noticed they've brought back a couple of cartridges for this offering:

338 RUM
300 SAUM

Remington site doesn't show them but Sportsmans says they're offering them. I can find the 338 on other sites, so it seems to be legit. Not the SAUM. Claims there is a 300 SAUM at my local Sportsmans and at many other stores in my neck of the woods (Boise, ID).

A 7.4 lb. rifle in .338 RUM... Better get you a good brake or a can if you plan on shooting that one alot.
