It a little too late to talk me out of buying it seeing how it is sitting on the counter.

BUT I would like to have some idea what type accuracy I can expect.

We can by-pass the "save your pennies and get a real barrel"...I know full well this barrel is for budget builds.

That said I have two custom builds (for me they are) one has a Douglas barrel, the other a ER Shaw. The later is the reason I pulled the trigger on one of these kits.

I know most of you guys have seen my 300wm target shot with my ER Shaw barrel...for me it is pretty impressive.

So I wont bore you guys with it again! LOL

Any way the Douglas barrel has been a little bit of a disappointment. It shoots good. 400 yard 12" steel is a guaranteed hit. But it takes all day to clean after 30 to 40 shots.

Any way...I have been trying to find reviews good or bad but have mostly found threads from 2011...I think the most recent was 2015.

Never did find one where the barrel wouldn't shoot. But there were complaints about the condition of the bore. They were in shock that the barrel shot very very well.

Any of you guys go slumming and buy one of these kits?

I don't have a bore scope but it looks great so far on the outside.

Caliber: I kicked around another thread the 6.5-06 or 6.5x284 and ended up going 264wm. On paper it would be the cheapest build I could do.

There are not any kits in 6.5-06...dies loaded ammo and brass were all more in the end even though I had to buy brass and dies for both 6.5x284 and 264wm. Parts were cheaper going 264wm.

I will post pics as I go putting it together. I'm not sure if blueprinting the receiver is necessary but I'm kicking around the idea of doing it.

One thing I really like about Savage, what ever things I find not to my liking I can pull it apart and put it back together.

I know Savage Shooter would be a better forum for this, but I don't find those guys to be as courteous as you guys have been. If your not in there click info doesn't flow as easily as it does here.

Ok...need some reviews!

First of all, I believe you made a sensible choice by going with the .264 WM. In my tinkerings with 6.5mm cartridges, I too, found that the .264 WM is the most straightforward, and least expensive, path to a fast 6.5 cartridge.

Secondly, I don't believe "blueprinting" your Savage action will yield much improvement. The point of the Savage design, in the first place, is the ability to shoot accurately with less than perfect machining.

As far as E.R. Shaw barrel quality, I cannot speak from personal experience. Though the Shaw and Douglas barrels are not considered top quality, either one should represent a step up in quality from a factory barrel. My first aftermarket barrel was an Adams & Bennett, which I dare say, is a rung or two below your Shaw. Like the Douglas barrel you mention, it was not the smoothest thing in the world, but it was a decent shooter.

Every barrel maker produces good barrels and bad barrels. The better barrel makers produce good or great barrels more consistently. The only way to truly know what you have is to break it in, develop a good load for it, and shoot it.

I have a Shaw 6.5 Remington Magnum barrel on a 40X; it shoots steel out to 800 yards without issue. Rifle is stock without other modifications & unbedded.

Good luck

Jerry

Like has been said every barrel maker makes good ones and bad ones only way to know is to shoot it. I also think you made a good choice in the 264 Win mag. Get you some Hodgdon Retumbo powder and give it a try. Out of my Rem 700 action 264 Win Mag 27 3/4" long 9" twist Shilen barrel with 130 Accubonds it does 3350 fps and sub MOA accuracy. SMOKES deer waaaaaaaaaaaay out there across a bean field. In case you do not know you can make 264 Win Mag cases out of 7mm Rem Mag cases by simply running the 7mm into a FL 264 Size die. I have found that 7 mag cases are easier to find and are cheaper. I use Winchester cases with CCI 250 primers 66.5 grs Retumbo with 130 Accubond 20 thousands off the lands. My rifle has a tight chamber. Good luck and have fun.

I have a Shaw barrel on a Ruger action in 6.5 Creedmoor and am very happy with it. I pull a dry bore-snake through it after each trip to the range, and clean for real about every 200 rounds, which never takes much effort or many patches. I'd buy another when the time comes.

RT,
Yes I know they are easily made, but I have two 7mags and don't want to add the confusion of which 7mag brass goes to which gun.

Thanks for the info on the load data. I have noticed the published data seems pretty mild/conservative FPS wise.

I'm still waiting on more parts to come in, but it getting closer. My donor rifle, while very cheap was an older model so I have to update several parts with the bolt.

We used them using our button to make our AR barrels. They were easily doing 3/4 moa which in an AR easily translates to 1/2 moa in a well built bolt action. We had a few that with a certain load that would shoot 1/4 moa @100m. I could not believe it. But we did clean up the crowns on all the barrels as just SOP. Finished chamber and off to nitriding they went with their bolts.

Here it is so far;
ER Shaw barrel
Sharp Shooters Supply competition recoil lug and bolt sleeve
Choate stock

Most of the load data for the 264 win mag is done with a 24" barrel. That is the reason that velocity is so low. It is my belief that they need a minimum of 26" to start doing their thing. Mine has a 27 3/4" barrel. I did not have this rifle built but picked it up from a friend who just had it built that wanted a rifle that was a safe queen that I had so we traded. My rifle has a 9 twist, I would have had an 8 twist barrel if I was having it built. My buddy had a 28" blank and the smith only had to sacrifice 1/4" which was great.

Thanks RT...

What kind of fps are you getting with a 27" pipe?

I do wish this one was at least 26 and a heavier contour. Maybe that is in the future for this rifle.

Waiting on the guts for the bolt head is killing me...shold be here this weekend!
