Last summer I tried selling my Ruger Mark II VT. This 28 inch barreled factory firearm was too heavy to carry on a hunt. I have a custom Remington in the same 6.5 Creedmoor caliber that was more practical, so it had to go.

Unfortunately, no one wanted it. So after a few months on consignment, I took it back home. The store it was on consignment at had used it for weekend entertainment, and it showed. The squeaky clean barrel was badly fouled, among other things.

One thing I forgot to mention in the article: I tried to sell this rifle in its original condition and had no takers. Now that I made it unrecognizable I don't think I enhanced my chances of selling it.

I found out in the last couple of days: Should I tire of the short barrel or the caliber, the threads for the Ruger 77, Ruger American and the Ruger Precision Rifle are all the same. 1"-16 TPI.

If you cut a groove in your stock where the RPR barrel ring would be, you can even run an RPR barrel with a nut. You can get the least expensive barrel nuts from PTG and turn your 77 into a switchbarrel!

I enjoyed your article very much, Thanks for writing it.
It's amazing what you can do with firearms that aren't ideal. I have cut barrels before and cleaned them up with files and hand reamers with very good results. I really like that you went after the stock for balance, not appearance.

I've come to realize that function trumps appearance - for me. If it works well, it's beautiful!

The same thing happened to me . There is some real scum in the firearms industry that need to be delicensed and put out of business. I got the last laugh in the long run because about two years later he got busted for illegal guns and it was his second offense so he lost everything and went to jail for two years. In fact I saw him in a large local shopping center just a few months back at a coffee bar , looked like a homeless person . I could not help myself , just walked past laughing out loud other shoppers must have thought I was nuts but he knew what it was about . God that felt good.
I never leave a gun anymore with anyone unless they fill out a detailed description and condition report and sign photos I have taken so they can't say the gun was like that when they got it . It makes them look after it a whole lot better . Many will juts say no well there the ones that are no good.

I didn't like what happened - in that I am the same. I wouldn't have taken the opportunity to bugger up a factory rifle like this if it had been sitting in my place gathering dust. He was a catalyst spurring me to action - even if he shouldn'ta done it.

Do I wish him to fail? Nope, and I told him I want to see him succeed - and I mean it. He made a mistake. I've made many more than he has - you know, I'm older . . . I've paid money, blood, pain and people as the consequences for my mistakes. I don't wish the price of my stupidity on anyone - really! I just, and only, hope that folks learn.
