270-300 Win Mag now feasible

Any hope for us (me) shooting a 1-9 twist with a 270 Wby? It is warming up outside...

I bet, I can get close to almost 3700fps with that bullet...If I worked up a load...I can load it long with my 3.7" mag box....

How long is the bullet?

I would start with H1000 and RL26...

Ill check if it is good for 1-9. I know 1-10 is out

If so ill get some to you. Pm me your address just incase

I am interested in trying out a few of those. 135g .... whew. That out to wind up the chrony.

This may be an odd question...but what does the bullet manufacturer want to know? Accurate at speed? How far off the lands? What powder? Expansion at slower velocities? I have lots of freebore in my 270 Wby...What is important to the bullet manufacturer?

I have posted this before...a 140gr SST way far off the lands @ 3630fps (magneto speed)...three rounds... 1-9 twist, 28" barrel...

The 135gr bullet should be close to 3700fps...?

I played it safe on loading the 135gr CEBs

I used 75gr Retumbo. They Chrono-ed at 3400 with more room for exploration. They did shoot into a .625 group. The next day we tried a ladder test in the desert- beset by gusting winds from 12-19.

That was just frustrating.

So I am going to push the envelope with the next batch

Anybody else shoot theirs yet?

I decided to develop a little 270/300WM data with some of the pile of 130g Barnes TTSX I have while fire forming brass also.

I shot 4 with 72g of RL22 at an average of 3467fps with three going into a cloverleaf. Then I started a pressure series with IMR7828ssc from 70-74g and speeds from 3316 to 3481fps. Amazingly, the last four went into a one hole group of .312"@100y even though the powder charge was stepped up from 71-74g in 1g increments.

I think there is room for more velocity but I will probably try some of the 135CE's at the next weather opening. It is nasty right now. My coal will be around 3.454" for a jump of .050". The Barnes were at a 3.469" coal for a .050" jump.

Good info.

I loaded 75 gr of retumbo as a starter. They shot well- 1/2-.625 at 3400 Fps. I only get to the range in the afternoon so it is always breezy and bad lighting. I dream of the .1 groups of the early morning shooters. No pressure signs at all, so I will load up the next batch in a ladder. I am seating the seal title band at the mouth of the case.

.277 has been a victim of lack of popularity in target shooting mainly but also military . The bullet manufacturers put more work into the popular calibers . 224 , 6mm . 6.5 mm, 7mm, .308 .338 etc. Barrel manufactures are similar . .277 is a fringe dweller .

You are correct- it may either be a fringe, or a victim of its own success. There are millions of win m70s, R.E.M. 700, Roger 77s savage 111s in a 1-10 twist.

So a bullet manufacturer has to create something for where the market is. The newest set of bullets that have come out and faster twist barrels have given new life to this caliber.

# 4 # it will out perform the 264s and 7mms at distance in energy and drop.

140s with a Bc .590, 150s at .625. , 165s at .650 and the170 @ .704.

So it has been the forgotten stepchild of long distance shooting, but it doesn't have to be.

Manufacturers can make or break a caliber , with the right support and products the .277 can do as well as any other but it just never happened , a bit like 6mm Remington never won over the .243's avalanche of advertising hype . If you pay a respected gun writer to endorse a product then it's sales go up . Even if the product is inferior to it's competitors . He who pays first wins .
A wider range of better bullets for .277 is a good thing for the caliber .

Hi guys- i have a new opportunity for you.

Daniel Smitchko from Cutting Edge Bullets has sent me some of his brand new 135gr Maximus bullets to test. These bullets require a faster than 1-10 twist. So if you have a 270-300 with a 1-8 and you would like to test some of these please pm me and ill share them-as long as ou share your data!

Thanks hope all s well

Phillip

Jake,

Any of these left? I'd like to try some in my .270 AM. JohnnyK.

It is so true- those of us that have self migrated to these types of pages are always looking for something different. It is true you can kill a Deer dead with a .308, or an open sighted 30-30. You can also drive a yugo or walk to work.

Attitudes that shut down ideas don't help anybody and they turn away a lot of new people looking for answers. somebody asks- hey has anyone thought of this? And the answer is " just buy a 7mm". That wasn't the question. And as an owner and past owner of various 7mm calibers, I'm not biased- that much.

So we keep searching and standing on the shoulders of those who came here before. LTLR, KIRBY, BIGNGREEN, FEENIX, BUDLIGHT etc. one day marketing will catch up to us, but we will be on to something else by then.
