What was your e.s. of both shooting sessions?

I forgot to mention that I ran two different lots at each session. One had been loaded on the RCBS Chargemaster and the other trickled to weight on a different scale. I originally was interested in seeing if there was a difference in SD between the two lots. However, when the temperature dropped so much I decided to shoot them both to see the velocity difference. Both lots dropped the same in velocity. They started out about 25 fps different and remained that way when the temperature dropped.

I have noticed in every cartridge I have used it 243, 260, couple of 6.5's, 280AI and several belted magnums that the ES's and temperature stability was improved by using Magnum instead of Standard primers. It would be worth testing to see.

I would not have thought it mattered in the 40-50 grain case capacities but it did across the board. IMHO RL26 needs FIRE at ignition.
 
Very interesting. I've been meaning to test that as well. Did you notice any measureable difference in velocity or just more consistency?

Not so much in the smaller cases but in the belted magnums 25-35fps gain was normal. I am sure there was some increase in the smaller cases as well but a lot of difference igniting 75 grain charges and 45 grain charges, guessing the speed increase in the smaller cases was within normal ES's is reason it didn't really jump out.
 
That's about what I figured for around 45 grains. I'm going to pick up some CCI250 and test those. I have some Fed 215M's if I can't find 250's locally. In the 45 'ish capacity cases did you find you had to drop your load by much when swapping for the magnum primer?

Here are the results from my logbook. I didn't record ES for either or SD for the second day. While maybe not scientific for some it's enough that I feel comfortable with my findings. Both lots were 45.5 grains R26 with CCI200.

November 26th - 54 degrees, 11% humidity, 23.95 baro
First lot - hand weighed 10 shots
3414 fps avg
SD 14.6

Second lot - RCSB Chargemaster
3377 avg
SD 15.5

December 14th - 25 degrees, 37% humidity, 23.98 baro
First lot - 10 shots
3356 avg

Second lot - 10 shots
3320 fps
 
In the 45 'ish capacity cases did you find you had to drop your load by much when swapping for the magnum primer?

I did by a grain in the 243. But ended up back at previous load, however the 224 is going to be a different animal I would drop it 2 grains and work back to known accuracy speed to be safe.

Your SD numbers are a bit higher than I would like (but puts ES's @ less than 1% of velocity so is plenty usable). This may also improve if you can stabilize a bit more with more primer. I also use magneto speed and agree that what they out put is REAL.

This will be interesting, keep us posted.

I found a brick of 250's. I have 100 pieces of Hornady brass ready load so I'll load them with both 200's with my standard load and work up a 250 load and compare them side by side. I won't get to it for a while but will report back.

I have some 250's I was going to try in my 260 ackley as well, and I was planning on trying a magnum primer. I'll do the same and we will see if we can find some characteristics of this powder in smaller cases
 
I ran a test with CCI250's yesterday. I was able to use half a grain more powder than CCI200's without pressure signs. SD was 30 with the 250's and 26 with the 200's. I'd loaded up some at the same powder charge as the 200's to run through the MagnetoSpeed and then got distracted and didn't test them. Of course, I could do some more testing but that was my initial test.
 
I tested out some loads the other day to see what it would do as far as velocity out of my 6.5 Creedmoor 26" barrel. I was using 140 gr nosler rdf with br2 primers, in Nosler brass seated 2.870. I let them get good and hot with my truck running and the heater on so I could get a better idea of pressures in the warmer weather. I would take 5 from the truck put them in my pants pocket and take them one at a time out and shoot them in a warm chamber.

None of the above showed any sign of pressure problems.
I have some Hornady brass coming in that has more case volume, will try 48 to 49.5 in them.

I was using a Magnetospeed for velocity checks.
