I have a savage action that I was going to build a 300 win mag, but a couple of guys I shoot with are shooting the 28 nosler and the 195 bergers and it is quite impressive. I love 6.5 calibers so I am also thinking the 26, but may also want a 30 nosler now that I am looking into it. What are your thoughts? It would be for long range hunting as well as shooting steel on the weekends. I have a 260 that I use to shoot the majority of my steel with right now

Don't have a 26-Nosler,
Sold the 28-Nosler because it was built on an R700 and I like Mark V
Have not taken game with the 308/26-Nosler (slightly different from the 30-Nosler)
I prefer 300Wby to WM.
That is background for: If it were me, 28-Nosler. Go for that 8 twist barrel. 26 inch. Use a R700 RUM or Mark V for the donor and you should have one nice shooting rig.
I used my 338/26-Nosler for elk and would use it for everything form there up.
MY local deer hunting is close range and usually unsuccessful with temperatures in the 100s for the entire season.
If I ever get to go for speed goats, I am likely to take my 270/26-Nosler with 117 Hammers going in the 3800fps range.
I'd go with .300 WM; 1:9" or faster 26"+ barrel, load it with Berger 230 and you're golden.

I would go with a 28 nosler shooting 180+ grain or 30 nosler shooting 200-230 grain. The 26 to me is over bore to the point of deminishing returns.

30-Nosler is shortened at the shoulder by .050. Less capacity, longer neck.

The time tested old fashion ho-hum .300 win mag wins out here...it has stood the test of time and passed with flying colors...nothing wrong with any of the others but until they get some time under their belt I'm not choosing any if them.... There's no substitute for .30 cal holes in game especially when you added elk into the equation... From point blank to a thousand it's hard to beat, easy to hand load, lots of brass still, more types of bullets than you can speak of, just a fine cartridge !!

If you want just one rifle from an 80lb antelope to an 800lb elk, you most likely would be best served with a cartridge you can load up heavy lead or down with some zingers. I watched a friend drop a moose with a Nosler 26 like it was hit over the head with a sledge hammer, he hit it in the hump with a 129gr bullet, it was only about 120yds away though. If it was me personally, I'd be going with the 28, but I could be biased to the .284's, I have 3 .280's (2 of them Ackleys) and after years of playing the magnum game I decided to get ride of the magnums all together, I don't do any long range hunting though, with 700yds being about my limit.

i went with the 28 nosler. i was in the same boat as you although i already have a 300 wm. the 28 with 195s should be a hammer for most large game
I have a 28 Nosler very impressive, it shoots a very long ways and hits really hard!

You may want to be realistic on how much you are going to shoot the 28 Nosler for weekend fun. They are not known for having long barrel life. If it were me combining hunting and fun shooting, then opt for the 300 WM.

As this thread is five years old.
I would imagine if the OP went with the 26 or 28 Nosler, by now he would have been through several barrels if using it for steel and hunting and settled on the one that allowed him a little longer barrel life others are barrel burners.
