New lightweight build

My recent build has a SS 700 SA, 22" proof barrel, and edge McMillan. It will wear a vx6 3-18. The few ounces extra is worth the magnification for me. I almost splurged on a Defiance lightweight, but didn't. I chickened out right at the end. I'm hoping to mount it in a NF on piece 20MOA aluminum base/ring combo to save a little more weight.

Assuming you meant 3-18x, not 6-18x ??
Which reticle are you going with ? I found some of the cross hairs a bit wide at long range, I think the fine duplex and TMOA are good. Their push button illumination is kind of annoying in that you kind of have to cycle thru it to get where you want, blinding yourself in the process. The turning knob like an NXS would be my choice if I went with illumination, but the NXS is heavy. So far I think the VX-6 is near the top. The metal CDS turrets take a lot of the mushy flex out that you get with the capped plastic turret that simply pops off.

You are right, 3-18. I'm going to add a TMOA reticle and a 2 revolution turret. The illuminated reticle is a wash for me. They are illegal here in AZ. To be honest I didn't even know they were available in the vx6. I have taken the batteries out of my NXS, so I won't forget.

Alright guys heading to pierce this week so time to decide on what barrel. Some are saying light contour ss spiral fluted. Some say proof research Carbon. I want the lightest one possible that will still shoot great cold bore. I won't be stringing lots of shots together so heat and poi shift I'm not concered with that for deer hunting. Being 22" don't think even with a super thin tube it would whip. What are your thoughts? What's the lightest I can get and still have great accuracy?

Your parameter was shooting deer up to 300 yards, is that still the goal ?
I think flutes take off ~2oz each from a 26" tube so that's something to think about. I put a brake on the stock Savage lightweight 6.5x284 barrel and it shoots to 600 easily. I haven't fired a quick 2nd shot so I don't know if it will be anywhere near the 1st but the barrel gets plenty warm after one round. I have no experience with the carbon barrels. I did shoot a Christiansen Arms 300 WSM with no brake, no thanks.

Well 300 was to be really safe as far as killing power but if it is really accurate sub moa
The. I will go by the min velocity for the bullet. More than likely it should be out around 600 yards for deer. That is kinda the new goal as 300 was more of a worst case if it doesn't shoot well. But I'll be spending so much on it that I wanna be as capable as possible. And I'd feel ok taking a 600 yards shot on deer. On a side note I used to work at a performance shop for sleds they were leaders in ti parts. They are making me ti action screws and sling mounts. He said anything I want even scope ring screws he do just to because. Don't know if I'll go that far but it was a nice offer.

Ya so far I keep finding ways to shave weight. Gonna keep looking over build part by part to see where I can save some weight. So far it's been really fun but I think most weight will be In The barrel so I gotta really do some research. I d hate to get a light weight fluted barrel only to find out a carbon would be lighter. In theory they should. As you could take the thinnest barrel and make it even thinner. Then replace that material with carbon fiber. Thus reducing weight but having the same contour or even step up the overall contour but inner would be thin. I'm gonna call proof this week and see if I can come up with something. I've seen where people shorten shank and remove any weight they can. Gonna make as many calls as possible to different barrels manufactures as I can to talk this week.

Don't forget http://twistedbarrel.com/. They took seven ounces out of the lightest Pac-Nor that matches Weatherby six lug barrel. Pac-Nor made mine 26" long. I will start shooting it Monday, Lord willin'. It came in at 5 lb 7 oz. without the scope. Wish me success!

I suggest calling Manners Composite Stocks to ask about Tom's 100% carbon fiber lightweight stocks. They are light and tough.

McMillan has a lighter series also but I like Tom's better.

I like the feel of manners better as well but beware of their advertised weight. I have ordered and weighed 6 different stocks and they have all been 4-6 ounces over advertised weight. Called manners and they said their advertised weights are with out recoil pad and without pillars. McMillian stocks come in lighter for sure.

I just did a light weight 6.5 saum build with a 24" proof research sendero lite bbl. After threads and chamber was cut the bbl weighed 2lb 10 ounce.

I learned the same thing when I ha Proof Research (when they were called Lone Wolf). I was certainly upset when the rifle arrived. The guy told me it is standard in the industry because they have no idea what pad or metal you are going to use.

Since then I discovered Hastings Micro-Cell. I replaced all the 6-8 ounce pads with a 1.26" 2.9 ounce pad. So far no problems with them at all. I told Proof Research about them and MPI. MPI is now using them as standard.

Yep I do the same thing, whenever I order a stock I have it shipped w no recoil pad. I'm a fan of the .910" micro-cell!!

So you bought a pac nor barrel and had twists lighten it? Just curious.
