there is another thread here that was a few years old that I found interesting started by WINMAG titled why no 270-08? After reading the whole thing, I then realized it was 3 yrs old so I am posting a new question, well actually 2.

First, Did Mr Winmag ever go thru with the 270-08? I found this ineresting but I have a .270 and a 7/08 already
and secondly I This sparked my interests posted by MUDRUNNER in response to WINMAG

Re: Why no 270-08 ?
Why not just go with a .25 Souper? Wicked little caliber. Essentially a .257-308 Win, is basically what it is.

.25-08 (.25 Souper)

Recoil is virtually non-existant, potent, and capable.

......so what would it take to build one of these? I have a couple .243's sitting in the safe needing attention, or would you need to start with a .308 donor?
...and advantage /disavantage VS the 25-06 sitting there too?

Thanks

I have a 25 souper, and it is definitely a wicked little cartridge.
To answer your question. The 243 has the same action and bolt face as a 308, and as such is a great candidate for the 25 souper as you only need to re barrel.

The main advantage is the short action. The 25 souper is equivalent to the 257 Roberts, it will not equal the 25-06. But not to far behind.
I love mine. I use it for deer as well as coyotes.

I read the same post and sparked a lot of the same interests. I'm a 25 cal. fan and think the 25 souper would be a lot of fun. I was even thinking a good quality AR-10 build would be fun. Then I got to thinking of doing a AI type version that might get very close to a 25-06 in a short action.
The end day dream consisted of an AR-10 style rifle chambered in 25 souper AI cranking out a 115 GR bullet at or around 3000 fps.
I suppose getting the gas regulated for function and just getting it to feed properly from the magazine would be a nightmare.

Sure is nice to fantasize though.

I have nothing against the 25 souper, in fact it warms my heart to see someone talk about a .25 cal. but if you are going to go through the trouble and cost of a new barrel and new dies why not just do a .250 Savage improved and essentially do absolutely anything the .25-06 can do in a very efficient short action cartridge? The standard .250 Savage is an excellent cartridge in its own right as well with today's new powders like R-17. I am able to achieve over 2900 fps with 115gr Bergers in my 24" Aams & Bennet barrel.

Unless you absolutely need a 25 cal why wouldn't you just get a 7-08 and shoot the 110ttsx or 120 ttsx ? I have a finnlite with a 20.5" bbl that shoots the 120 ttsx at 3200fps. The small 7mm bullets would have a better bc then the 25 cal bullets.

Already have one and shoots 139/140 gr better than 120's. At least what Ive tried so far but valid point. thanks
...just saw the .25 souper and was intrigued by it.

I believe the 115 Gr tsx in 25 cal has a higher BC then either of the lighter ttsx 7mm's that you listed.
