I have some 195 grain Bergers on the way. Has anyone run these through 7mm rem mag? What velocities did you get? What powder? Is it to heavy for the 7mm Rem mag to take advantage of? Currently running 180 Bergers with success. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've got load data from Berger for them, as I'm going to try them in my 700SPS. Seems like RL-33 would be the best powder to use in my opiniongun)

Unless you are at a super-high elevation above sea level (6,000+ feet), your factory 9.25" twist will not stabilize the 195's.

For the slower velocities the 7mmRM will push the 195's to (estimating around 2,850 average), you will need at least an 8.25" twist... to stabilize them, according to Berger's calculator.

It shows at 0 ft elevation (which only jumps up about .02 SG per 500' of elevation) you will only have 1.21 SG, and you need at least 1.5 SG or greater for it to be a stabile setup.

To achieve a 1.5 SG with a 9.25" twist, and the bullet traveling 2,850 fps MV (or more), you would have to be hunting at 6,000 ft of elevation minimum.

Yes, I am aware of the stability Mudrunner. Where I hunt I never see shots over about 200 yards, so I'm wanting to try these and get a feel for them before I put a custom barrel on it. Even at 1.3 SG (I'm around 1500' elevation), I believe they will still be stable enough to such a short distance. It's all in the sake of experience and experimentation :) these will be the first Bergers I've ever used, so I want to see for myself just how well they perform

It's not a factory 9.25. It's 9 will that make enough difference?

I wasn't referring to your rifle. I was referring to 7mmShooter's factory 700 SPS.

At 200 yards, stability is not a huge factor, but I think it will be extremely tough to even get them to group with a 9.25" twist...Even at your elevation.

I'm not saying that it definitely won't work...Because you never know until you try. But here are the reasons why I think they might not...

According to Berger's stability calculator, to achieve a 1.5 SG with the 195's in a 9.25" twist, at 1,500' ASL, the bullet would have to leave the muzzle at a minimum of 4,638 fps.

Also, I have not been able to get a 9.5" twist 7mm RemMag to shoot a 180 VLD or Hybrid, even over 2,900 fps. And that combo has a higher SG (1.35) than your combo (recalculated at 1.27 with your elevation).

Mudrunner, so I take it my barrel won't stabilize them either?

I don't know the specs of your rifle or the elevation you shoot at... Use this tool. It will help you determine if they will or will not stabilize.

You will have to manually input the 195's data, as Berger has not updated their calculator to include the 195's specs. The bullet length is 1.648", and the G7 BC is .387.

I'm getting 2850 from my 28" barrel. I've hBN coated the bullets. I'm over their max load. The bullets are seated 0.010 from the lands. I've shot to 1809 yards with it.

Thanks MudRunner its marginally stable in most conditions. I guess I will send em back and my next barrel will be an 8.25 twist. Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Austin,
Dan Glover just built me a 7 rum with an 8 twist brux to shoot the 195s. It is an amazing performer. I will do a write up on the gun shortly. Call Dan and ask him about it. We will be field testing the 195s this weekend. I have very high expectations.
