Good to see another "western sloper" on here! Where will you be hunting? Do you have a muzzleloader tag? If you do shoot that animal first and wait near the gut pile.

Another "western slope guy" here. Find a place known for having a good population of bears, find you a nice shady spot with a good view, set up the spotting scope and wait. Good luck

I live in GJ and hunt the Douglas Pass area, and on recent scouting trips to the area I plan to hunt elk I've seen bear. Both times the bear was in, or close to, wet ground and water. Undergrowth is high on the Western Slope this year from the spring rains which makes bears harder to spot, but the Aug - Sept monsoons rains haven't kicked in so the Western Slope is hot and dry with fewer places for them to get water.
If it stays dry hunt water sources and a chokecherry patch if you can find one.
Talk to bow hunters and hunt any gut piles they're willing to tell you about.

If you've got a good vantage point that overlooks a food source, you're on the right track to hammering a bear. With the high bear populations in CO right now you will see bears if you are patient.
I've got a bear tag for the western slope that starts with the 1st rifle elk season, with a great vantage point overlooking a huge hillside of gambel oaks that elk and bears regularly pass through. If a cow moves through first then I'll have a gut pile to go along with all the acorns to up my odds that a bear comes in.

Just returned home from unit 444. We saw more bear than cow elk. Only hunter in group who had a bear tag killed a chocolate phase approx. 350 lbs.
