AR-15 24 inch best powder for 75 match bullets

Today I tested Varget 25.3, ar-comp 23.6, & H414 28 gr. Just 100 yards bench rest all of them chronoed right at 2900 fps plus or minus 20 fps.

Varget is good, but it is toss up between the other two. I should have taken pictures of 1/2 inch 5 shot groups

AR-15 comp is good powder. Varget is non existant and I used up my last to reload a couple 100

H4895 is my go to powder for 223 for 65 gr and heavier bullets in any 223 platform.

I'm not really sure how I fooled you on just listing some possible powder choices for 2900 fps 75 grain and even the weights of the charges???????

I have to wait for better weather and the local weekend only range to really shoot bench rest. My little 100 yard shoot is not a scientific test.

The problems with varget are the case capacity of .223. You have to sort cases to use the highest volume and 25.3 makes them full to the neck even with a tall drop tube. The powder rod size doesn't make for good progressive loading, and It is non-existent locally. I would not use it for 75 or less grain bullets even if it was available.


AR-comp is smaller rod powder and leave room in all cases at the 23.6 level. I was able to put in over 26 grains using 55 gr pils. H414 another abundant powder also both available in 8# Both of these worked better than Varget on my limited shooting test.

Real testing would come out on thick concrete benches with targets out at 200 and 400

Not sure about the 75 grain bullets but I had a 24" 1-9 twist that I developed an awesome recipe for. Bullets were 55 grain Sierra BTHP's with 25.5 grains of Win748 giving me avg. velocity of 2928 and a standard deviation of 7 fps. If you want more velocity I was able to get avg. vel. of 3219 and SD of 12 fps with 27.5 grains of Win748 and everything else being the same. On seating depth I use a comparator and I seated the ogive about 5 thousands off the lands. Another powder I have had good results with loading for different AR's is Benchmark. Since you have a chronograph it shouldn't take too long to come up with a recipe that your gun shoots well.

50 grains is probably a little light for what you want too but if you or anyone else wants a good Benchmark starting point load to work with (I don't mean minimum load) always refer to a good manual and watch for signs of high pressure but 26 grains of Benchmark gave me avg. gel of 3318 with a SD of 10 fps.
