Hey guys, just bought a Lecia 1600B for my 7mm rem mag. I'm trying to stretch out far and hit some 1000 yard targets soon. My question is the Leica 1600B gives me the range obviously, angle, Barometric Pressure and temperature. What else do I really need to put into my ballistics app besides a wind speed and direction? Probably just humidity? I can probably find a cheaper alternative than a Kestral for just those 3 variables right? Any recomendations?

At 1000yds you will need more than the three variables you have listed, the Kestrels the way to go.

What other Variables? I have the ballistic app "Shooter" and after putting in barometric pressure, altitude, temperature and angle compensated distance... the only fields left are wind speed, direction and humidity (which I can get from a local weather station). And coriolis effect is left but I don't need a Kestrel for that... Im just trying to figure out if 300 bucks of ammo is more important than a Kestrel at this moment

I would buy a cheaper wind meter myself, my Leica gives me good info though you have to be a little wary of the temp but baro, range and angle are GTG. Set your humidity at 50% and forget about it, you have to shoot a heck of a long ways before you'll see it come into play!

Awesome! What wind meter do you recommend? Also, how do you go about finding what direction the wind is coming from? And is Shooter ballistics app good enough for long range shooting?

Personally I run Kestrels but the one's Len recommended are great also at a good price. I get my direction by looking down range at my target and pointing my hand dead into the wind and what every that is on a clock that's my o'clock wind direction. Shooter is a very nice program and will do a good job, I have about a dozen programs ranging from free cheap apps to multi hundred dollar programs on dedicated units and it takes some serious range to see the difference if you correctly set them up and have solid data!

The ballistics on the 1600B just won't get it done. The Kestrel 4500 AB is a great unit. Put these together and you are good to go.

So if I had these two together I wouldn't even need a ballistics app like Shooter to get my adjustments? And what about these pocket pcs and Exbal I keep reading about?

I hunt the tops in New Zealand after Thar, long range shooting normally angled shots, unable to pick up weather stations,I use the 1600B coupled with a Kestrel 4500 with the Horus ATRAG Ballistic Calculator, this set up enables me to shoot out to 800 metres.
