Anyone have any experience with the Remington .338 action found in the 700P MLR? I've heard that it wasn't manufactured to handle a cartridge of that size, and Remington basically just shoved the .338 in there and hoped for the best. I've also heard that it's perfectly fine.

So does anyone have any firsthand experience with it? How does it compare to say the Savage .338 action?

I have an opportunity to purchase one and just wanted some opinions. TIA

Disclaimer: I have zero experience with this action, and I don't know anyone that does.

For a company as large as Remington and with as much to lose, I don't think they'd just throw something out there and hope for the best. If they didn't learn from the humongous recall that they went through recently for all of the triggers . . . then they won't be in business too much longer.

Just my .02.

I would tend to agree with you. There's just not much information to begin with, and when there are people that say they "shoehorned" the .338 into a smaller magnum action/bolt face, it's somewhat worrisome.

Seems like there are a decent amount of people that own these rifles but with varying degrees of accuracy. May just wait and spend the extra few hundred to put towards a TRG-42 or something similar.

Thanks.

I have a Rem 700 MLR 338 Lapua . It shoots 300 gr OTMs at 2850 fps and gives 3/4 to 1 MOA accuracy. At 2835 fps it gives 5/8 MOA. I have over 800 rds down the pipe and its still going. Have shot it out to 2200 yards with about 1 to 1 1/2 MOA accuracy. Kill a deer from 702 yards with it! FIRST thing I did was take that worthless AAC break off it. The AAC break on the MLR 338 Laupa does NOTHING to reduce recoil. HAd my gunsmith make me a custom break. I started off with MLR 338 Lapua THEN= built 338 Lapua IMp on STiller Tac 338 action with Bartlein barrel, Mcree Stock, and Nightforce scope. I have shot it to 1 MOA at 2500 Yards. MY friend has Savage 110 in 338 LApua it groups a little better at 1800 yards than MLR Rem 700 in 338 Lapua. I think its because Savage 338 Lapua has 1-9.5 barrel AND tighter neck! Hope this helps:D

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks! I think the Savage is hard to beat as far as a factory .338 goes. I'm going to keep my eye out for an Edge or LM here in the classifieds, but if it comes down to it I'll probably end up with one of the Savage models... and for about $1,000 less than any other option to begin with.

Thanks for the insight!

No problem. Im a remington guy myself. When I bought the Rem MLR 338 Lapua, I already had a Jewell trigger in the safe to go in it. My friends Savage had a MUCH better break on it, plus the Savage 338 , felt much heavier to me. We mainly shoot at rocks from 1600 to 2500 yards. The main site in = check and verify fps target we use is a 500 yards. The Savage shot the same as my MLR at 500 yards. BUT at longer range is was a little better!:D
