I just ordered a Savage 10 Predator Max 1 in 6.5 Creedmoor. I also have a Leupold VX-3 Long Range 4.5-14x40 30mm with CDS. I got the scope in a trade so I figured it will go good with the 6.5 CM. For right now I am going to start practicing at 500 yards but I plan on stretching her legs out to 800 if the gun can handle it.

Leupold states that the scope has 116 MOA of adjustment. MidwayUSA says 113. So I guess my question is should I buy the 20 MOA base now or wait? I want to get good at 500 before I take her farther out and I know I don't need a 20 MOA base for that.

Going by my ballistic app using a 140gr A-Max that is zeroed at 200 yards, I will need 63 clicks for 800 yards. Using the 120gr A-Max zeroed at 200, I will need 57 clicks for 800 yards. That will be maxing out my scope.

Thanks for any help.

I suppose you realize that it takes 4 clicks on the scope to equal 1 MOA. As such, your 63 clicks would equal 15.75 MOA which in no way is maxing out your scope elevation adjustment.

BTW, looking at the Leupold website, if you have the 40mm objective as you state above, then you only have 62 MOA of elevation adjustment.

If your post was a mistake and you have the 50mm objective, than you have 116 MOA of elevation adjustment.

Here is a link to the scope I have. VX-3 4.5-14x40 side focus 30mm w/ CDS. 113 MOA Elevation and 113 MOA Windage. MidwayUSA advertises that it has 116 MOA on both.

Put the 20MOA rail on it and forget it. I used 15 MOA rails on my guns because to dont have any 800 range or anything to shoot at. I prefer EGW rails myself

Old post I just came across but I was wondering if you two shooters ever realized you were both right about the scope but didn't realize there are two similar scopes. A 1" version and a 30mm version.lightbulb In either case 62 MOA or 113 MOA will get you 248 "clicks" and 452 "clicks" on the dial respectively.

Of course with a 300 yrd zero on a 300 WM you'll only get "about" 55 clicks I think to 830 yards because of the zero stop being used on a custom elevation dial. If you use the dial that the scope comes with then you can max out the turret on either scope model.

Product #120603 4.5x14x40mm CDS "1" tube has 62MOA of travel
Product #120605 4.5x14x40mm CDS "30MM" tube/ side focus has 113 MOA of travel

Yes, get the 20 MOA now. The EGW HD is an excellent price. Whichever rail you decide to get, bed it.

Here's one the best advice you'll ever get from an optics SME ...

Even though the scope adjustment range may be large enough to get to 1,000 yds, you should use a 20 moa base. That's because off-axis optical aberrations that degrade resolution increase with incidence angle. You should set up your rifle so that the incidence angle is minimized for long distance shots (where resolution matters most).

Assume the base is within +/-10 moa of alignment with the rifle bore. Let's also assume your bullet drops no more than 30 moa at 1,000 yds, and you like to zero your rifle at 100 yds. With a standard base, you would need up to -40 moa of adjustment to get to 1,000 yds. That means you need a total 80 moa of adjustment.

With a 20 moa base you would need up to -20 moa to get to 1,000 yds, but up to 26 moa to get to a 100 yd zero (worse case boresight alignment in each case). That means you need a total 52 moa of adjustment. With a 20 moa base, however, the incidence angle at 1,000 yds is 20 moa less, so the image will have less blur.

Good luck!
