Need someone to just narrow it down for me.

Hello everyone, hope life is well and hope this message finds all of you in great health and comfort.


It's been over a year since I looked and researched nightforce scopes. I just can't make up my mind on which model to buy. It's getting frustrating.

I shoot competition midrange to 1000yds, I am also obsessed with hunting since I was knee high. my heart tells me Nightforce competition 2014 FCR-1 recticle 15x55-52, my mind says F1 ATACR MOAR-T recticle 5x25-56.

I truely dislike thick recticle lines, these two scope offers that. I understand ATACR offers 120moa vs 55moa for competition model. Just not sure which one to purchase, seriously need your input on clarity for competition model at highest magnification Ect.

I looked in hopes someone that knew might comment.

I do understand how difficult it can be to make the final choice with high end scopes. I stressed over the various choices, and finally went with the ATACR 5-25. No regrets.

why did you go with ATACR ?
which recticle did settled on ?
Second or first focal plane ?
What type of engagements is the scope for ?
How far did you shoot with it lately ?
Last question lol, did you look @ competition model ?

I have only a couple shots behind the ATACR. A 375CheyTac (not my rifle). The reason it is on that rifle is because it will withstand the recoil.

I have been behind a few Nightforces. In the dark the Nightforce shows its stuff. None of them seem to have "fat" reticles.

I am a Sightron and Leupold preferrer. Leupold is for hunting and Sightron is for target/competition. Simply because my local competitors use Nightforce. Got to meet or beat their performance with different equipment. The fat lines on the Leupold hunting scopes with fine cross in the center (duplex) works.

I generally keep my scopes at about 2/3 of max magnification. So, with the ATACR that puts you at about 18x. That would definitely get to 1000 yards with a reasonable sight picture and FOV.

All that is background of course for...

Go with the ATACR MOA. We were at 1500 yards and could see the squirrel hole. Missed the squirrel though LOL. Oh well, it was our first long range day with that rifle.

thanks for your input, I'm leaning towards the first focal plane model and moar - T reticle. I just hate thick reticles

I had been looking at as many variables as I could, and I had decided on a US Optics when the ATACR appeared. Reliable folks began recommending it (Broz has a good review here). SFP, standard MOAR, but I like this one so well, I have the 4-16 FFP on order.

I bought it for LRH, but when the F! arrives it will go on my main hunting rifle, and the 5-25 will go on heavy .300 Win-Mag for general medium to long range shooting.

I'm going to 2 schools this summer and can hopefully give you a better review next fall. A couple of weeks ago we were @ 600 yards, left my Swaro spotter home, and just used the ATACR. Shot rock chucks to 500 yards last summer, and was very impressed with the repeatability of the adjustments.

Reticle size may be a problem for some but I'm not there yet.

Another thing that tipped the scales is the local Cabelas had them on the shelf, and the ability to pick it up, twist knobs, and look through it sealed the deal.

Excellent, have fun with it and keep me posted after your schools. One of the biggest down fall in buying technology, every year there's something new hitting the market.

I would never hunt with a rifle that had 15 x on the low end like the comp.To high,I use some that go to 25 and that most of the time isnt usable or as clear in the hunting I do in NWest.18-20 is good if you have descent light,have lot overcast days where im hunting,fog also high in mountains.Plus I pack my stuff to high country.

You did not say what competition?

If F Class or BR, you want 1/8 clicks and would be better served by buying a used 12-42 NF BR for about $1000-1200 and picking up a better suited hunting scope IF you are trying for dual duty competition/hunting here.

A 20 MOA base makes the 12-42 or the 15-55 more than capable elevation wise for anything to 1k.

the ATACR is not noted for being a competition scope by anyone in either of those games.

If shooting PSR, there are other scopes that are way more common and useful.

It a shame 12-42 doesn't have zero stop. I am still not sure which direction I 'll go. I really want (like you mention) dual use scope, I will not buy two scopes Though let's see what happens.

If you want dual use, then why not go with the NXS 5.5 x 22 with MOAR-T. That is what I did and am very pleased.

Joel Russo posted a picture of a quick zero stop mod for NF scopes that he learned from Bruce Baer. Bruce did 2 of my NF . All it is one set screw.

8 32 is also an option. Much cheaper even if you have to send it back to change the reticle
