I've been creeping around this site for years and searching all kinds of caliber, barrel length, reviews, advice and many other rifle related topics. I love the site and this is my first post. I bought a Winchester M70 Extreme weather in 270 while I was in College Station visiting my girlfriend. I put a Leupold VXR on top with a EGW base and Badger rings. At the range I tried Powershock, Trophy Bonded, superformance 130 and 140, and several other factory loads as I broke it in. It definitely shot minute of whitetail but I wanted a tack driver in 270 that I could put my suppressor on. SO, I took it to my gunsmith in Mansfield Tx and said I want a 26.5" #5 Bartlein 1-10 twist, Timney trigger, Threaded 5/8-24, bedded in the Bell and Carlson stock that came on it, and Cerakote in Texas Tan. Waited forever for the barrel and then it finally showed up. He took a couple weeks to get it all fixed up and then I was ready to go break it in. I put a Bushnell DMR 34MM 3.5x21x50 on it in Badger rings. Worked through loads for 135 grain Sierra Matchking and 140 grain Berger VLD. Norma brass, CCI BR primers, and H4350. The magic load ended up being 140 VLD with 52.5 grains H4350 loaded to 3.659. I read on some other sites how the 270 basically sucked for long range compared to 6.5 creed and I get that the BC is lower. But here is what's funny, it's running 3,050 FPS and it's 2.3 Mils at 500 and 5.2 at 800. At least that's what it was last week when I was able to shoot it that far for the first time. I am very pleased with the rifle and the recoil is about the same with the 30p-1 suppressor and the APA little bastard G2 brake. Just wanted to tell anyone creeping on the site like I have, if you want to build a long range 270 winchester, Do it!!! It works!!!

That's insane!! 270 AI!! Holy crap a 175 grain. I had no idea they even made one that heavy and with a BC that high. Lol

Yep, they are impressive! The 175 is now only available is bulk/special orders but not sure what the minimum is. The 165 is still readily available.

Berger is supposed to finally have the 170s this year, fingers crossed.

Not sure if you saw this but here's a very nice article on 270 Win For Long Range Shooting

bw,

Wait till you stuff some 7828ssc or PP-4000 in there and work up to a "respectable" MV.

You'll be dropping some Mils off of that drop..... With 140 VLDs which to me are big enough for what you want to shoot a 270 at which would be about anything TX has to offer:)

Wow! I wonder if a 1-10 twist would work with those 165-170 grain bullets. Probably not huh? Thanks for the heads up on the article!

Stirred my interest in my 270s. Found some 150 Accurate Bonds LR today.
published BC is .625 I am hoping them and some new RL-26 might be the trick?
I have a a 70s Savage 110 action I might use for a new barrel at 1/9. Only shooting will tell the story but as I have said before don't bet against a .270 Win.
I also will try the ABLRs in my Match 270 win that I built a few years ago to prove that it would shoot just as good as his new fangled 270 WSM. It did too.
With Bullet selection getting better look for more 270s to be on the range.http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/images/smilies/shooter.gif

I too have 150 Nosler LRABs but haven't had a chance to load them for my .270 AI yet. Check this out >>> http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/nosler-lr-accubonds-bc-testing-results-137554/

Thanks for the info great article on BC. According to the Calculator the 150ABLR will
shoot great in a 1/10 at my altitude of 5800' Hope they get here soon. I am stuck with
shooting gophers with my .223s.gun)

Oh man, I was shopping for some bullets and saw the accubond LR for sale but all out of stock. Gotta try those! I just got done swapping scopes on the 270 as the DMR wasn't going to stay on there permanently. One last change will be the McMillan game scout that's hopefully coming soon. Noticed that shooting prone was getting more and more uncomfortable with the sporter's swept grip but didn't want some honkin stock.

Noticed something else... When trying to set the eye relief and mount and level the scope, front part of the EGW base extends far enough forward to limit the distance I can move the scope rearward without the objective touching. I moved up from standard to medium rings and that did help but i still have to crawl the stock a bit or back it off to 12 power to get it right. I guess it is a trade off huh? Either mount it high and get an adjustable cheek piece or deal with it being set a bit more forward than I'd prefer. As it sits there is about 4 business cards worth of clearance between the front of the base and the bell. I'd hate to go too close

The 270 is far from dead and with the new heavies is pretty potent! I have had a few guys building 270 Shermans lately and plan on shooting the 165 and 175 Matrix. At 3100+, why would you not? The 280 A.I. has been touted for years with good reason and if you compare the numbers, the 270 Sherman wins.......Rich
