Nightforce SHV question

Does anyone have a pic of what the turret looks like with the cap off, or does anyone know if it can be converted to the exposed knobs. I want to use my scope to dial in my shots, but it looks like this scope would be a pain having to remove the caps all the time especially in a hunting situation. However, in a way it would also be nice having the turrets covered so as they wouldn't get banged around on accident like exposed ones can. I just know I want to dial my scope in and not use the holdover method.
Can anyone give me any insight that is using this scope? I take it most people using this scope are going with the holdover method, instead of dialing? Thanks

I have one coming due monday, the 5-20 model has a zero set feature. the turret cap basically bottoms out against the bottom of the scope body. I wish they had just made the other 2 models with the same setup. You can just leave the elevation cap off if you want when you expect to dial the scope. I am going to see if I can rig up some shims on mine so that I can have a zero stop as well.

I leave mine on for transport and remove the elevation cap for hunting. I use the hash marks to hold for windage.

Thanks you for the picture. I actually think I like the idea of having my turrets capped so that nothing gets bumped. How is the glass clarity on these compared to the sightron SIII and the other night force scopes. Also I read on another thread that the SHV turrets are not meant to be cranked on daily the way that their other models are. I read that the other models are supposed to stand up to 100,000 clicks or something where as the SHV will only stand up to like 10,000. I will be calling night force monday to find out about the click thing first hand. wouldn't mind anyone chiming in on what they know in the meantime on the clarity as well as the click situation. Thanks

let us know what NF says about that.

I have never looked through a Sightron so I have no comparison there. My old eyes could not tell the difference between this and a Nightforce NXS. Very nice glass and clearer than my Vortex vipers. I predict there will be a 5-20 SHV in my future.

I have a 4-14 and a 5-20 SHV. I also have a Sightron SIII 8-32X56 and a 6-24 Vortex PST. The glass on the Vortex is the worst for my eyes. It works but I'd take a Sightron SIII any day over a PST. I have not shot my SHV's a lot but I have been very happy with them. Glass is clear and they track perfectly.

Does that mean that you perceive the Sightron and the SHV to close to equal?
I hope so, as I am REALLY REALLY liking the power range and just about everything about the Sightron S-TAC 2.5-17.5 X56, however, I know I can get the night force SHV for only a couple hundred more, and so Im wondering if its smart to get the sightron over the SHV........ Decisions....Decisions......

For me the glass clarity seems very close. I have no experience with the S-TAC. Just finished shooting my SIII 8-32X56 which is mounted on my 6.5 SHERMAN. I crank it right up to 32 power even when shooting at 100 yds. Crystal clear and at that power you can really lock on to your target to shoot nice tight groups. I am sure the S-TAC is nice if the weight won't hurt you. You can't go wrong with a SHV or a SIII in my opinion.

No experience withe the SIII. But just came back from shooting my SHV and a NXS on the same day. Both on a 300 rum. Thought that both scopes were clear and tracked very well. Can't really say that I could notice a difference in the quality of the scopes. Now how well the shv will hold up compared to the nxs I can't say. I dial for range and really didn't find it real inconvient to remove the cap. Will admit that I can see myself misplacing (nice way of saying losing it) some day. Believe that if you want the scope to remain water proof you need to have the caps installed.
