extraction problem

My neighbor has a remington 783 in a 270 Win. He bought some PPU ammo and took it out shooting. Not a warm day, but his gun would not eject the spent cases, the bolt was extremely stiff and had to use a solid object to tap on bolt just to get it to eject.
I don't have a caliper to measure the spent cases, but will get one later today. First thought is a pressure issue. I told him if it warms up anymore not to shoot the gun. But could there be an issue with his chamber?? For me when ever I've had a stiff ejection problem its been from pressure.
Any other ideas???

Re: ejection problem

Wrong terminology. Difficult extraction not ejection. Ejection is the brass being launched from bolt face once it clears the receiver port.

Was it hard to pull the bolt handle upwards to disengage the bolt lugs? Or was it difficult to move rearwards after pulling handle upwards? Different issues.

Re: ejection problem

Thank you for correcting me......lifting the bolt up is fine. Just difficult moving the bolt rearwards.

Look at the case to see if there is a shiny area near the web. Could be a stratch or maybe one small area that is shiny too. I am thinking the chamber might need polishing.

Did it do this with other ammo?

Could be a poor cut chamber, seems to be a quality control issue with Remington lately I have seen this twice with Remingtons purchased within the last few years. One was on a 300 blackout that even broke the extractor the chamber was so rough. The other on a 30-06 their long range model. Check the brass for scratches or scrapes. I am not the only one who has gotten a bum cut chamber from them.

I had the same problem with a new 700 and sent it back to Remington and they gave me a new barreled action. I tried polishing with 000 steel wool and a hand drill and it didn't do anything to it. No visible defects that I could see. Must have been a bad cut on the chamber, who knows.

Twice??? ****, must be an epidemic.....

The problem is not because it says Remington on it....The problem is because it is a 783. 710/770/783 are NOT model 700's. They are cheap inferior budget rifles. They are not precision tools built for marksmanship.

I do hate that you had an issue, and it does sound like either an oversized chamber, or a rough chamber that needs polishing...But I would take it to a smith before sending it off to Remington.

Personally, I'd trade it in, and pay the difference on one of the model 700's...Like the SPS that is built on a better action. That way, in the future when you do decide to customize it, you'll already have a 700 action with the BDL bottom metal and mag assembly there. All you'll need is a stock, barrel, and trigger, and a smith to put it all together for a very nice semi-custom rifle.

Sounds like the rifle is developing high pressure with the ppu ammo; I'd simply stay away from it and shoot something that shoots well and doesn't try to break your bolt on extraction. It happens; the old win 7stw 150 grain load developed 75 kpsi in my sendero 7stw. I also saw a 243 with a case pretty much fused to the bolt from fed ammo that had to go back to the maker for a going through.
