I was blistfully happy changing over to be a handgun hunter and leaving rifles far behind. All have been sold or traded in on my handguns. My revolvers and TC encores are the bomb. I seen on a couple of sites that were dedicated to long range hunting. I will be the first to admit I always thought shooting at animals at the distances I hear about and see on TV was a disgrace. I have to be honest.

Well I was doing a search for something about bullets or whatever and it brought me here. I was like oh GOD whatever. Well I started to read and read and read some more. Watching stuff on TV and Youtube.. YEAH I KNOW but I knew NOTHING about this stuff you do. I started to be changing my mind on this stuff. How dedicated to precision you all are. AMAZING

Well after a few days on here I couldn't take it anymore not having a GOOD rifle let along ONE LOL. I did a lot of searching on here for what could be a great rifle to get me the results I would be looking for. I just bought now just a few hours ago on Guns America a Reminton 700 Sendero SF II in 7mm rem mag. No glass on it for awhile to save funds and to learn what is good and what is not for what I want. I am from the old school, sighting in at 100 yards and hold over for longer ranges. Now you guys turn a knob and shoot at 8036 yards. LOL. I have NO CLUE about what I could or would want. I will ask later. its mind numbing..

But I have to say my opinions are changing and feel bad for how I judged you all. SORRY. You guys are a VERY DEDICATED AND PRACTICED type of person that you put more time than many into your craft or weekend warrior.

I am 45 and have been reloading for about 27 years now. At first on RCBS single stage and now my Dillon XL 650. I am looking forward to talking a lot more about things I want to do to my new rifle.

Oh What is GREAT BRASS for rifles? it was always Lapua as best or has it changed.

I am confident after spending time here I made a great choice with the sendero for a great platform to start with.

Take care and looking forward to learning more from you guys.

Brian

Welcome to LRH, and good to see that your opinions have swayed to positive about our sport.

First, great choice in rifle. You will most likely want to swap that trigger out to a Timney or Jewell. The factory X-Mark Pro triggers are not very good or smooth in function.

Second, Lapua is always tops...However, they don't make brass for belted magnum calibers, so the next best in line would be Nosler.

And third, good luck with the LR shooting, and be sure to keep us posted with your results.

Mud, Thanks for the welcome and I have read a ton of your posts over the last few days. I plan on a few changes to my rifle and a new trigger is on my list. I am probably going to send it to a smith for new trigger new stock and Muzzle break. The Muscle break. But this is in the near future.

Scope is a huge decision as I have NO CLUE.

Fear, Thanks for the welcome. Nah, I don't miss any of my rifles at all. I don't think I made any good decisions when I bought them. I would never own any of the ones I bought and traded off.

I have done a big trim of my gun safe and am only putting quality guns that I really want. Some I have to say were impulse buys that I do regret. Not anymore. I will do a lot of research before I buy again.

I can't wait to get going with my Sendero.

Welcome to our addiction! I really enjoyed your post and am tickled we may have another to join our ranks. I can honestly admit that I have learned more since I've been on this site that I did in the previous 45 years of self taught long range shooting ( I expect my teacher was to blame ) :)

mountainman56 thank you.

I have had no real teacher. My father didn't hunt shoot or fish for that matter he worked for his family. My brother for some reason did a little hunting and when I went on 1 squirrel hunt I saw him take one and my jaw was on the floor and I was hooked. My brother who is NOT a big hunter or even a shooter anymore was really no help in teaching me.. He taught me hunters education as he helped the instructors so he did do that. But I had to learn the VERY HARD way about hunting taking up archery and fishing and all the pains that go with it. I don't know how many years went by without even taking a deer. But when I did I was really hooked.

I feel like that right now trying to learn this LONG RANGE stuff. I feel so out in left field and no one to personally guide me. So I guess I will have to rely on a lot of you guys suggestions.

445 supermag,

Welcome to LRH. Not that I want to mess things up any more...but there are several long range hunters on LRH that are dedicated just to pistol shooting.

Brian- welcome. most answers in this forum are " remington sendero leup 6.5-20" ..that is just me. what are you shooting ? deer ? elk? besides factory triggers i have 5 shilen and one jewell. shilen are cheaper and harder to install. enjoy. ron

It's guys like you that make this all worth while. Like I said earlier this is the place to learn. A couple hundred years ago my Dad thought I was crazy when I told him I could hit a 500 yard target. Later, one of my favorite memories of him was when I overheard him braggin to a neighbor how I shot an antelope buck at over 600 yards.

I only belong to two forums, this one and a traditional muzzleloading forum. The two don't really go hand in hand but I never liked to color inside the lines anyway. :)

If you have any questions feel free to PM me anytime. If I can't answer them I can steer you to those who can.

Yup I discovered Ernie is on here as well as another site I frequent. I Do love it with my TC encores but I just may keep my TC's for 300 or under ranges and then its rifle time. Don't know yet. But if there are bullets and brass and powder its all good fun.

Just another fun adventure.

Hi Ron,

I am shooting mostly deer, whitetail and mulies and some Black bears too with chances to go after elk in the near future. Hey while I am out there throw in a speed goat for good measures.

It sucks living in NJ. No rifles except for ranges. I have to go to PA to actually use my rifles which I will be doing next fall.

When I am more financially secure I will be taking those trips out west.

Thanks so much for your offer it is much appreciated. 500 to 600 yards to me is dreaming land. I can't fathom being able to connect at such ranges. But the more I research the more impressed I am with you guys and the time and effort it takes to do what you all can do. I am blown away.

I just hope someday I could make an accurate 300 yard shot. TO me I would do the jitterbug if I could pull that off accurately. I know you guys are laughing at that but I have NEVER even attempted anything over 100 yards. mostly do to where I was hunting more than anything.

I can't wait to get out of this state and move south to NC hopefully or a bit farther. Atleast I can use rifles and handguns for hunting.

Allow me to take the first opportunity to describe a good starting point
"Long range hunting" begins with short range practice. Go slow, take your time, master (or at least get it down pat) one distance before you take on the next. Distance compounds those small issues that can drive you nuts as the target moves farther away. gun) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (X)
