Well first off I'm going to be building a new rig for mid to long range steel shooting. Probably won't ever hunt this gun but who knows there's always a chance. Ok I've been looking at Savages because I like the accutrigger and I'm familiar and comfortable and feel they are a little more user friendly with barrel changes and what not. Anyway I want a 300 win mag for different reasons but I came across the Savage 110 FCP-K in 300WM and fell in love but they don't sale them anymore??? I went by the local shop and they can't get them. Where if anywhere could I get my hands on one? I like the fluted barrel, accustock, threded barrel and brake. It basically has most of the things I'm looking for.

My backup plan is more of a start from scratch. Considering buying the Savage Hog Hunter in 308 and building it up the way I want. Anybody have a good recommendation on a stock for it? Local shop has one and the stock feels cheap. Last question is would a accustock off of another model 10 fit? Thanks for any info

I have seen the HS version and did consider it but I personally like the accustock and don't want to pay extra for the HS stock when I like the cheaper accustock. Also I really want to have a threaded barrel so I can put a break on it. I like brakes because I shoot 50-100 rounds at a time and 300 wm can be a little punishing after about 30. I will check with savage shooters and see if anything turns up.

if you want to build a 300WM, do yourself a favor and find a donor action that already has the magnum bolt head. its one little thing that'll make your build easier. also make sure its a long action. If you got that 308 and wanted to do a 300, then you would have to change bolt parts out plus single load due to action size. I built a 284Win on a 110 action and it turned out great. good luck

This is good advice.

Look into the Savage long range hunter. Comes with accustock that has a cheak riser AND comes with a brake installed.

I have looked at the LRH the only down side to it is the round muzzle break throws grass and dirt back at the shoot when prone (according to reviews)

Well its all pluses and minuses. I would highly advise against factory threaded barrels without brakes. They almost always need to be retimed by a gun smith to avoid exactly what you just described. Your best bet would to buy a fcp hs precision and throw a custom brake on the barrel if it shoots well or have it rebarreled with an aftermarket barrel with brake.

Agreed! At first I didn't like the look of the HS stock but it's starting to grow on me. What's it usually cost to have a smith install a break? Also does the HS stock need bedded or is it pretty good without?

I bedded the recoil lug on mine, I've read some do and don't bed on the HS stocks and they shoot pretty good. Just DO NOT bed the rear tang. Another thing is torque those action screws up mine came in at 60 in/lbs.

Savages are known to shoot very well out of the box especially those. I'd shoot it first and see how it does. If not up to par...then mess with action screws. If that doesn't fix it...then bed the recoil lug. As far as having a break installed I've heard 100-200 depending on which brake and who the smith is. I'd also suggest whatever rifle you get...shoot it before having break installed. Not often but once a great while a barrel will simply suck from the factory and you don't want to invest that much money into a crappy barrel.

if you want a good brake installed on that barrel, look into ross schuler brakes. I'm getting ready to send a couple barrels his way. He makes the brake himself, then will fully install one on your barrel for $80 plus shipping. I've looked around and I don't think you'll be able to beat that. I think there are more than a few guys here on the forum that use his brake and like it a lot.

Get a savage used. If you can find one with a mag bolt head, it's just a bonus. They aren't hard to work on. I've built a few now with good results. Get yourself an action wrench and a barrel nut wrench. If you get a barrel that is pre-threaded, then buy a "Big Chubby" muzzle break. No timing necessary. They work great. Make sure you time the bolt. You only want .050"-.055" protrusion of the firing pin from the bolt face. As far as a stock, if you don't mind waiting, buy a stock from Stockade Stocks. They are very nice. The Bell & Carlson sticks are nice. You can get the A5 fully adjustable now for mag fed savages now. I had the A2, but it's for a blind mag.
