What are your thoughts on light sporters for long range ground hogs? The older I get, the less I like carrying my 15-18 lb .204 and .224 cal rifles. We back-pack through old lava beds up to 5 miles in one outing, usually twice a day. Thanks in advance.

I've hunted mine with my 7 pound 300 WSM before. It sure was nice to carry but recoil is a little much if you get lots of shots. I see no reason why you couldn't run a 8-10 pound rig and enjoy the heck out of it.

I guess what I was getting at was, can I still maintain 1/4 moa out to 700 yards with a light sporter?

The rifle could certainly be capable; the question is are you? No doubt a heavy rifle makes it easier but I shoot similar groups with my 7 pound sporter as I do with my 13 pound heavy rifle. It just requires that I pay close attention to my technique and is less forgiving to errors. It won't hold the accuracy as well under sustained fire either but I doubt that'll be a problem with chucks.

And no doubt I shoot more consistent with my heavy guns day in and day out. The light rifle will just make you that much better when you go back to your heavies :)
