.338 Win Mag or .300 Win mag?

650 yards on whitetails and having trouble with 300 Ultras....??? Sounds like some bad shooting to me, and not waiting till they walked into open areas, and not making good shot choices. Maybe they needed better glasses and some Barrett M82A1's with 80x March scopes for those massively long 650 yard shots on those super hard to kill ultra-massive beast 100-250 lb. whitetails...

I don't shoot a 338 WIN but I run the 300 Berger at 3000 and I hunt with a bunch of guys. We all set up benches and there were three 300 Ultra Mags and my 338. Every deer they shot with the Ultras ran and some went 50 yards. They also missed a lot because they couldn't get through the trees or brush. We were only shooting from 400 to 650 yards. Last year we used my 338 and 4 shots 4 bucks all DRT. By the end of the first week the Ultras disappeared and the owner of the land got his 338-378 out and said you made a believer out of me. I just know the 338 with a 300 Berger hits really hard and it goes through the whitetails. I used to shoot the big 30's but since I got my 338 I love the power it has. The owner won't let the 338's shoot at his steel because even at 1000 yards the 300 grain bullets go through and the 30 wont. Matt

The distinction, here, is that you are doing this from the large cased 338's, which are a completely different animal from the .338 Win Mag. Your experience is consistent with feedback I have seen from others on this site using the Lapua/RUM/Norma class cartridges. The Win Mag simply doesn't have the grunt to use the 300 grain bullets effectively and isn't anywhere near being in that class.

I swear I have seen so many guys go out and get buck fever and just lose or maybe they never had common sense when it came to shot placement or patience. Why would someone be taking a shot with any rifle regardless of cartridge or caliber thru heavy brush and trees with out a clear bullet path? Even close up let alone, at what was the distance, 650 yards??? Thru heavy trees and brush? WOW

To me the difference wasn't between your rifle cartridge and those guys as much as it was you actually knew what you were doing and took the time to take clear shots.

BTW I have seen a spooked buck run into a my friends path who was shooting with a rifled slug 12g and put one that ended up sqaure behind the shoulder @50 yd and that **** thing went all super freak and some how managed to bound n sprint snorting and spewing blood out its nose and mouth almost 40-45yards before the front legs bowed and he nosed dived. When we opened him up the whole inside was jello and the exit hole was 3". I still would not have believed it if I had not seen it with my own eye. It was a nice 10 pt but nothing out of the ordinary for a really good size 5-6yr buck.

650 yards through heavy brush, wow, I feel I am in the presence of a magician!

Heck, I've had bullets from a 300win dive and miss critters because of a couple of blades of grass; I'd hate to see what a bullet going through brush would do.... Probably hit the next deer in line:cool:.....

Just thought Id let you guys know that you had convinced me. I ordered a 300 Win Mag today.....should have it next Thursday. Thanks to all for their input.

My bad ...

Make and model?

Win model 70. I wanted a Super Grade...but after more than a week of calling and emailing getting a super Grade was close to a fat chance in hell. Win told me that in the .338 caliber they hadnt even made a super grade .338 since august of 2014...so if I put either caliber on backorder it might be this late july before Id get it....bummer!!

That should do it, congrats!

300WM all day long. Shoot Berger 215's and you'll be more than happy. My 300WM shoots 208 AMAX's into itty-bitty groups.

Good thread. I would have chosen the 300 win mag with a 215 too.

One thing that seems off is the predicted velocity of the 338 win mag with a 300 gr bullet. 2400 fps seems slow. Is this with a 24" barrel?

I get 2500 fps with a long throated 338 RCM and the 300 gr Berger using a 30" barrel and RL-17. I would think a 338 win mag would beat this especially if it had a 26" or longer barrel.

Anyone have actual numbers?
