Looking for input/suggestions on a caliber choice for a build

I have the following action to use as the platform of the build but I'm not sure what caliber to go with.
300 Weatherby vanguard stainless action (.540

The gun will be used for hunting deer sized game, maybe up to elk sized, but primarily deer 0-1000yds

Thanks for any input

+1

but

How does it shoot now?
How much do you want to change?
Do you want to stay 30cal?
Do you want to loose the belt?

There are so many chamberings that will fit your needs. Standard and wildcat. Belted and not.

I've built up 3 short action Vanguards.

New barrel.
Timney trigger.
New stock.
Bed and float.

The biggest challenge is getting that barrel off.

IIWM: Pac-Nor pre-fit. No chamber or short chamber. Sendero profile. Fluted.

Shoots horrible now it (it will hold two decent but then throws a flyer)
I'll up for any changes
No, don't have to stay with 30 cal
Belted vs no belted (doesn't really matter)

Calibers in my current line up
270wsm
300RUM
7mm Mag
30.06
300win

You've already got a .300 Win and a 7mmRM...So, it would almost be irrelevant to suggest a big magnum. But the .300 Ackley or 7mm STW would be a good large magnum addition.

It's a shame it's not a standard bolt face, or I'd recommend the .25-06 AI or 6.5 Sherman.

However, with your bolt face, a .264 WinMag or .257 Wby would be a good addition to your caliber selection.

That's 300wby and compounded with the hammer forged barrel.

Have you considered a wildcat?

338/26-Nosler? Just finished mine but its getting a brake so I can get some recoil relief when testing.

The .300 WBY is actually a very accurate cartridge???

Easy there Tarzan. :D LOL

I'm very fond of Roy designs, cartridge and rifle. Had 2x300Wby until one became 300RUM.

I collect Mark Vs to shoot and shoot them in Roy chambering and other, so I know a bit about what I say.

The 300Wby is indeed accurate but not a rapid fire cartridge. Even my fluted #5 profile Krieger bull sported gets hot after 2 shots and starts to wander. I was saying it's SOP for a Wby. That when added to the inconsistent expansion behavior of a hammer forged barrel makes the job of shooting very slow super important for the load developer.

My best advice would be to leave it but the OP already has 3 30cals with 2 of them magnums. He's got that range covered.

I suggested a 338 because the OP doesn't have one. Long action Vanguard. Could go 340Wby as well if he wants to stay in the family.

The .300 WBY has often been used in 1000yd BR and has even one a few if I recall. But I don't think it matters to those guys since they shoot a log of a barrel so it probably wouldn't heat up much.

OP didn't say he wanted to add another caliber. He wants to upgrade his rifle. Of the calibers he already has, 300RUM, 7mm Mag and 300win would probably meet his needs.

Which begs the question, what's wrong with those rifles? If the calibers are fine but the rifles lack the accuracy for 1,000 shots, then I would stick with a caliber I already have if I could.

Any thoughts on a

7-300win?
Nice. Don't have one. Well enough known. Practical in your action.

Also the 338-300WM.

This to me is the fun part of the build. The "what's it gonna be" phase.
