Will a 338 225 gr accubond open at 1700fps?

I'm swaging this bullet down to .330 and using it in an old military rifle with open sites. Most loads and bullets hit about 9" high with the stock sites but I found a load starting this bullet at 1900fps that shoots fantastic and right on the money at 100 yds. This could be a really nice mild load for this old gun and I'd like to persue it for deer hunting. Looks like it would still be doing about 1700 fps at 150yds. Do you think it would open enough to be effective?? I'm thinking I'd never recover one to check how it did.

You probably wont get "full" expansion unless you hit some bone but I bet it does just fine for you. If you find its just poking holes try the Nosler Ballistic tip, it should shoot about the same but a little thinner jacket and not bonded you will get better expansion out of that and at that low velocity it probably wont blow up.

One thing all bullets have in common. It depends on where you put itand what you hit on entry. At 1700 fps I would go for a shoulder.

FWIW I also swage down 200 grain hornady spire points for this gun and to be honest the accubond goes through the swager with a little less torque. Am I crazy in thinking possibly the jacket for at least half the bullet might not be as tough as a interlock??

Pretty iffy at that velocity and a definite NO if you don't hit some major resistance! For that kind of velocity you might try an SST or even the A-Max..........Rich

You might check this with Nosler, but I believe they will still open down to 1100 fps.

I've done a lot of bullet testing including Noslers and I can guarantee you that short of a metal gong, they won't open at 1100'. I quit using them at really long range because they wouldn,t open at 1800'. I shot a 5 point bull at 1025 yards with a 300 RUM shooting a 200 gr. AB out of a 30" barrel with a mv of 3350'. I recovered the bullet from a quartering shot and all it did was rub off the ballistic tip and a little of the nose with virtually NO expansion. It was at that time about 6 years ago that I started making my own long range stuff...Rich

I stand corrected if your personal experince has found different. I've not killed game with them at the longer ranges.

A cast bullet or one with a significat amout of exposed soft lead might be a better choice.
