Please help, I found a couple of 338 shilen barrels in 28 inches long, very cheap, what contour would be better 5 or 7?

every advise is welcome.

THANKS

The #7 would be better if the stock will take it.

The #5 would be ok with a muzzle break but more finicky to
reload for.

Depends on what you are using the rifle for. If you have to carry it a long ways the #5 might be a little more to your liking. I am like J E and am more partial to the #7. Am having Kirby Allen build me one with a 28" #7. Can't wait :D. Good luck.

Joe,

Be careful of "good" barrel deals. The barrel is arguably the most important single item on your accurate rifle. Do not scrimp here. Great barrels are great barrels and they cost a fair amount of money. Don't let anyone talk you into "they are just as good as ..."

I think

178 usd + shipping for a shilen barrel from midway its a nice deal. although its not a select match. but its over the counter.

or should I wait and buy a select match?

thanks to you all.

thanks

When Specweldtom and I visited Shilen's shop we spent the day
observing there operation and found it to be very good.

I normaly buy select match only for the heavy barrel rifles but
understanding the rejection process for there barrels I am comfortable
with there Match grade barrel.

All barrels are made to the same spec., After air gauge testing they are
sorted and all barrels that are "Select " match have to be withen .0003
of the standard bore diamenter and no more than .0001 variation from
end to end.

Barrels that fall withen .0005 and .0003 are called Match grade and If
a customer Is in a hurry and delivery is an issue with the select match
then we go with the Match grade barrel. and all of these barrels have
shot under 1/2 MOA.

When you buy a Select match barrel you are guaranteed the tolerances
listed and when you order a Match grade barrel the same is true but you
may get a select match if they have lots of them and few or none of the
match grade barrels in your caliber.

Shawn is right about the Barrel being the single most important part of an
accurate rifle .Most barrel makers will guarante there barrels to meet there
advertised specs. The thing to watch for is one that doesent .

I have not used all of the barrel makers custom barrels but I do try to select
the best that he makes.

Normaly thier quality depends on there acceptance criteria and there willingness
to stay withen those spec.

If you want to call them and ask about your barrel you should. they will give you
the specs on your barrel and then you can decide to wait or proceed.

thanks again.

I`ll try to wait, as the reamer for the edge is still on hold, and have some time left.

thanks again.
